Things I Recommend to my Friends
I agree on a few things;
Tri shoe: Specialized Tri Vent shoe, got them the minute the where available in Europe.( wrote a review on it) http://www.trifuel.com/Detailed/Trivent_Triathlon_Shoe-324.php
Saddle: Specialized Toupe saddle, also from the Body Geometry "program" http://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCEqProduct.jsp?spid=16163
Aerobar: I realy recommend the Bontrager XXXlite Aero Bars with the S bend, I also wrote a report about it http://www.trifuel.com/Detailed/Race_XXX_Lite_Carbon_Aerobar-1047.php
Seatpost: Bontrager XXX lite Seatpost AND HERE'S THE TRICK: put in in REVERSE, this way you get a few inches forward in your bike position.( saw Tim deBoom do this) http://www.bontrager.com/Road/Components/Seatposts/22089.php
Crankset; FSA TT disc (54) and carbon crankset. LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT

Also, I wouldn't go on ANY training without my Polar S710i and Oakley Pro M frame.

P.s. perhaps this thread should have been started in the "gear"section?

It ain't much, if it ain't Dutch!!
Sunglasses: Oakley half-jackets for me not the lightest out there but they fit my face well and they stay in place when Im sweating it up on the run..
Tri Shoes: SIDI T-1 a week ago I did a 63 mile ride with them (without socks) not even the first hotspot, they fit my foot like a glove and I could feel the vents cooling my feet off.. (and I got them for around $140 - they are the non carbon version)
(ya'll have given some good recommendations)

A co-worker who is doing her first tri in about a month has asked me for some recommendations on some stuff. Here are is a list of the equipment and products that I have used and liked:
Goggles: Aqua Sphere Kaiman - love them. Never leak. Tons of visibility.
Tri Shorts (men): Zoot 6" inseam. Rugged. Comfy.
Socks: I love the champion brand moisture wicking socks I get from Target for about $3/pair. Perform as well as the $12 and $14 running and biking socks I have bought in the past.
Bike SHoes: For tri's the Specialized Trivent. For road, anything by Specialized (depending on your price range). Specialized just makes great shoes. They have this little nubbin in the sole that helps prevent hot spots. Love them.
Road Saddle: I didn't realize I wasn't comfortable until my friend suggested I get the Specialized Avatar saddle. Wow. Good stuff. The Specialized Body Geometry line of stuff really performs as promised.
Garmin Forerunner 301 or 305. Love it. Don't know how I lived before this crazy, cool device was invented.
Race Number Belt - really nice to have.
Bike Shorts - I have found that it is better to spend $100+ on a pair of bike shorts and wash them a lot than to buy two or three pairs of $30 - $50 shorts. My current favorite shorts are the $100 Cannondale Surpass Short.
Yankz - I went out and bought these the day after my first tri. Not only do they save time in transition, its nice not to have to lace up your shoes on everyday runs as well.
Energy Bars: LaraBar. All natural. Tastes good. Quality fuel.
Sports Drink: GU2O. Low in sugar. Sugary drinks don't work great for me. Also like Ultima Replenisher. No sugar.
Gels: I can't tell the differnence performance-wise between brands. Love the banna-strawberry Power Gel taste.
Recovery Food: Kashi Go-Lean and Vanilla Soymilk. Yum.
Bike Computer: Cat Eye Astrale 8 - it has cadence which I think is a good training tool.
Swim Technique: Total Immersion. Love it.
Run Technique: ChiRunning by Danny Dryer and/or Run Training for Triathletes by Ken Mierke. Similar message and technique.
Bike Training: The Lance Armstrong Performance Program by Chris Carmichael. Of course you have to adapt his advice to your limited time on the bike.
I'd love to see what others recommend.
