Shimano PD R540 pedals
I have heard that the SPD-SL design is a good one but that these 540 pedals are not very good because they are made of a plastic resin which flexes and isn't as strong as the stiffer metal versions.
My 540's sure feel like metal. I've been using em for a year with no problems. Havent ridden the ultrega or DA models so I cant compare, but compared to my old SPD style pedals, these things rock. Especially seeing as you can get em off ebay for $50.

I like 'em. Have been using them for over 3yrs now and find that the clip in and out is awsome. So far have over 20000kms on them and they still work great. Just remember to change the cleats as soon as you have float probs or like what happened to me (achilles probs) will occur. Have fun with them.

Thanks for the quick replies. I think I will go with these, especially if I can win a bid on ebay.
There's a ton of "buy it now" auctions for these prety much all the time.

Been using them for about 12 months now - really positive clip in/out. No complaints whatsoever.
They're definitely metal. (The Look pedals in that price range, i.e. Keo Classics, are resin composite.)
They're a bit heavy and clunky, but definitely durable, and easy to clip into and out of. They're one of the best-selling entry level pedals at the shop - no kidding, one or two pairs almost every day. If you aren't worried about weight, I recommend them over the Keos because of durability and solidity.

I have the 540s on my road bike and the Ultegra ones on my tri bike. I can discern very little difference between them. The Ultegra ones have a bit more definite clip in and clip out. I don't know that that makes them worth $50 more (or whatever). I think the R540s are great.

I was wondering how people felt about these pedals. This is the first set of pedals I will be buying and was wondering if these cheaper pedals would be OK for learning on and maybe racing a few entry level tri's?
