Trick of the (cable) Trade

The brake cable running underneath the top tube of my bike has a tendency to vibrate against the top tube when the road gets a little rough.

I know they make rubber "washers" that go on cables and stop this, but I haven't had a chance to get to a bike shop to ask for a couple. I did swing by the local hardware store and looked at rubber grommets, but they weren't quite small enough. I'm hoping somebody can dig into their bag of tricks and pass on a good tip.

Does anybody have any creative ideas of how I can fix this?

You could try wrapping a rubber band around it a few times. This would have a similar effect to the little rubber washers. Other than that, maybe a band-aid or a piece of tape would be a temporary fix. Basically, anything that will pad the cable against striking the tube. Just make sure you're in the middle of the cable, so it doesn't interfere with shifting or braking.

put a "zip tie" around your tube at 1/2 the distance....

no more rattle... (well if it still rattles.. tighten your break cable)
