Wind....why do I hate it so???
i hate it too. It always seems to be there on every one of my workouts especially this time of year.
Trevor Douglas YOU ARE AN IRONMAN!
yea....what is the wind usually like at all of your locations....it is pretty rare that I get a day that the wind is under 10mph. I was just wondering if it is like that everywhere or what...
It is best to just get out there and train in it. More than likely it will be windy come race day.
I used to hate it too, but came to realize that it makes you stronger and more efficient as well as improve handling - well at least for the bike. Still some days when really gusting it is a major pain in the butt.

Wind just doesn't blow...
It sucks...
But if you train thru it you will be prepared on the days it is windy and you will have a little extra on the days it doesn't.
Nothing to it, but to do it

I find it interesting that I can run or ride a course that takes me LITERALLY in every direction (north, east, south, west) and the darn wind is either in my face the whole time or cutting across my bike..
same on the run..

Yes, wind is a pain in the a$$ but the benefit is that it makes you stronger! Intervals into the wind are great on the bike. At the Vancouver airport here at Iona it is ALWAYS windy and I like to ride along the ocean front into the wind; makes the legs stronger. But then again I am a masochist. :D

you're just going too fast... ;)
Well trimedic, I used to be in your shoes. I would tell everyone that the number one thing I hated in the world was wind. I eventually got over it. I learned that you cannot defeat mother nature. It might be windy on race day, and the people who did not go out and train in the wind would not do as well as the people who did go out in it. I wanted to be one of the people who did well. I know that the midwest is one of the windiest places in the USA, so we just need to toughen up. When you go do races else where it will seem like cake! Good Luck, stay strong.
I HATE WIND. Whenever I'm on my bike and the wind is getting the best of me, I find myself getting really mad at it!!! Yeah, I know how funny that sounds but its true. My typical anger reaction occurs ...my face gets red, my fist clinch-up, and I hear myself cusing at it. In reality ...i'm mad at no one or at nothing that I can change. It's just my expectations of a perfect sunny, low-humidity day, with winds light and variable not being met that I am mad at. But, hey, when was the last time one of those days really existed? I too know I should NOT be mad at the wind. In reality I can't help it! I don't understand "Why I hate it so." Bottom line, I JUST DO!!!

I hate it too---and it always seems to kick in on my ride home at the end of the day:( Good thing about it though,is if you practice in it, it won't be such a big deal when you get to race day and have to deal with it .....and it will happen eventually :)
Definately not fun, but it makes you work for it. The anger post is funny. I'm usually OK with the wind...unless it is in one of those variable moods. I've done some long rides and ended up pushing a strong head wind most of the way out and then back. Not only does that chap my a$$, but it drains the nutritional stock as well. I can recall one occasion where I bonked pretty bad after running out of nutrition. I made it back, but the last 10mi. or so are still a little hazy!

You know it's a strong wind when it blows the saliva right out of your mouth. Or it could just be you're working really hard to be drooling like that...
Headwinds are the mountains of the midwest. Ride hard into it, then turn around and fly home.

Hehehe, gotta laugh at that cause the other day I was riding into like an 18-19mph wind here at Iona and some spit did get loose. All over the chest ewwwww. And then I tried to spit the rest out and got some on the shoulder :D I hate those days!

I second that! I just got in from the most miserable bike ride...cold, pissing rain and no matter what direction I rode in, I was riding into that miserable wind! I decided that of course, the best and only way to deal with it was to curse at it and tell the wind she was a miserable wench and I hated her. She didn't let up, but at least, neither did I!

i was out today and it was raining so hard that when it hit me in the face it REALLY stung! I had the full winter gear on (leg, arm and shoe warmers) but as i was flying around one of my usual rides in the terrible weather i thought "where would i rather be?" the answer was the same as always......on my bike. But im with bluebirdbiker, i am a bit of a masochist.
on a side note.... going out in harsh conditions when most people are still in bed, really increases the wow factor:eek:

hehehe.. I feel everyone's pain. Living in Cape Town, South Africa, the wind blows constantly for about 5 months a year at anything between 30-50 km/h (sorry, but the rest of the world uses metric:D ). I also used to curse mother nature in all sorts of interesting tongues on days where the wind blows simultaneously from all 4 directions.. but to no avail. Suppose the best is just to suck it up and get as low on the bike as possible... I always try to get my chin scraping on the tarmac... with the resultant back pain next morning:D
Fellow windhaters, at least I'll feel a little support on my rides to the shore of Lake Michigan. At least my wheels whistle me a tune if i'm lucky and its a bit of a crosswind.

Training with wind is a very good thing! You must think: "training is not racing so I better worry about speed ONLY on race day". :P

I rode with my usual group last night and it was real windy - I felt like I had a parachute hanging from my back the whole ride. At the time, I thought that the wind really sucked, but afterwards I felt great. I had to work that much harder to keep with the group. You can't shut it down, or lower the resistance when you get tired - you just have to fight it and keep on going. Nothing beats those rides on the warm, low humidity, slight breeze days, but every now and then it's good to have a challenge ;)

Ok, most people have rain, snow or even sickness as a training distractor. I have wind. I hate wind. It is so defeating. If it's really windy, which it is right now, I find that I don't want to go out and run or ride. I just can't get enough motivation built up to go and battle the wind.
Has anyone else suffered from this and what do you do? I know that the easiest answer is to buck up and get out there but that is easier said than done. If I had a training partner I might be more apt to go but...well...I don't.
