Knee Misery
There's always aquabike races...
Is your doc giving you any hope that you can eventually increase your mileage? Those connective tissue repairs can take a looooong time to heal. I've never had knee surgery, but I've broken one ankle and severely sprained the other (at different times). The sprain took more than a full year to heal to the point where it didn't hurt significanlty to run on it.
Were you fairly pain-free doing the sprint distance? Maybe you could stick with that to get your tri fix, and hope that you are still healing and can up your mileage more gradually. Who knows, that Ironman may still be in your future...
One thing I've run into...
Is the Orth a runner specialist. I've been finding that the stance and method on diagnosis, recovery, healing, and all that jazz can differ quite differently.

Hello my friend:
As JMA said, those injuries really take long, long too long time to heal....those tissues are really slow in repairing and getting stronger....
You have a long way ahead of you, but!!! at this day and age, there are plenty of athletes, professionals that go through injuries like yours...and with time, support, therapy, and a proper trainning to reinforce your knee you´ll be almost as good as new...
There is also a vast selection of orthopedic support that goes beyond the classical neoprene bracelet for the knee...
Try to consult with you doctor, tell him your aspirations...consult also with a coach....they usually have a great network of professionals that can give you light....
But I don´t think that your athletic aspirations need to be curtailed...is just going to take long.....
For now....I can recomend you, in order to keep your aerobic fitness to use low impact trainning like the bike, eliptical machines...swimming...and take really easy your running....
Don´t give up, hang in there, sports medicine is really advanced this days...and I am sure you´ll be able to achieve your goals...
Best of luck!!!

Thank you for your kind words and support! The recovery from my ACL replacement has gone quite well, no problems with stability or strength. The problem is the lateral meniscus tear which is repaired by trimming away part of the meniscus...this is most likely where the pain is coming from again. The only way to fix...remove more which means less knee cushioning and more bone damage in the knee. In all reality, I could keep running but I am bringing myself closer to a knee replacement.
Am I delusional to think I could still complete an Ironman if I had a great swim and bike and just jogged/walked the run with minimal run training?
Delusional....not even close man....
The meniscal tear is something that you should worry the less....now is painful because the tear...and the piece that is torn gets impinged between your knee joint...gets swollen...and hurts....sometimes like h$$...
But now with artroscopic surgery....the procedure is really simple...I remember during my early years as an Intern...they sent us to assist some of those procedures....
Not that I am in orthopedics or sport medicine....What I do is Internal med....
Any way....the procedure is just a shaving of the meniscus....they will try the most to keep us much of it as possible....to avoid loosing your natural cushioning....
Son dreaming about becoming an Iron Man...is not a delusion man...not at all...

So maybe I just need to pout...tore my ACL and lateral meniscus 3 years ago...was doing well, started sprint tris 2 summers ago. Decided to increase mileage and step up to oly distance and found that after several weeks of running, I can barely walk due to knee pain. Saw the ortho doc...his Rx...no more running would keep my happy for a lot longer...are there tri-withdrawal support groups? Am I crazy to think that I could become a stellar swimmer/biker and just jog/walk the run in a few tris? It's the day-to-day run training that will ruin my knee for good. One of my life goals is to finish an Ironman and I hear many people walk much of the run anyway? help! :(
