Hello

I am doing Lake Placid this year - wanted to see if anyone else was, if anyone had any more pointers, comments etc. Will be my first IM so I am anxious, nervous and excitied. I can't believe how quickly it is coming up though...~9 weeks is not a lot of time. But I have been doing fairly well with training - not perfect but pretty good....

You'll like the race, it has quickly become the most popular IM race in North America. Beautiful area, great spectators, and well organized course. I did it last year and am competing again in '06.

Best advice: Don' t kill yourself on the bike! The course has enough change in grade that you kill your run time pushing too hard over the rollers and extended climbs.

GOOD LUCK

Thanks for the info - taking it slow on the bike has been the common theme I have heard so I am taking it to heart...I am pretty competitive so it will be hard to go easy when others are passing, and it will be hard not to get worried over bike pace/time, but I would rather spend 20more min on the bike to enjoy the run...

It's all about the run. Do what you can to take it easy on the bike (the first half should feel too easy) and then rip it up on the run. You'll pass a lot of people that way.

I am going to go against the grain here. I, too am doing IMLP this year and I am of a slightly different opinion. I would say ride your bike like you train, however that is. I did my first IM at Wisc. last year and I was also told to back off on the bike, don't go anaerobic on the bike, save it for the run, etc. Here was my mistake, though: I did not do many long bricks in training. Mostly I did 30-40 min. transition runs after my 100 mile bikes. I was not properly prepared to run the marathon. I was determined to finish, though, even if I had to walk 26 miles. As it turned out I wasted a lot of time by not riding harder on the bike. I had been doing around 21 mph for my centuries in training and I backed off to 17 mph in an attempt to 'save it for the run'. I ended up run/walking the marathon anyway so I basically gave up over an hour by riding so slow. My goal was sub 13 hrs. and I missed it by 55 min. If I had it to do over again I would have ridden harder. If, however, your training is going such that you think you will run the entire marathon (not including aid stations and toilets), then I would say to go a little easy on the bike. Basically, train the way you are planning to race.

Just my 2 cents.

It's a really fine line that comes with experience...Just how hard do you push on the bike and still have gas for the Mary?
I've done IMLP twice 2003,2004.
You can't judge anything by '03 because it was 50 degrees and rained like hell all day.
'04 ...perfect weather.
The first lap on the bike isn't hilly, but the second lap is. same with the run.
Personally , I don't think the course has a flat spot on it. Up or down and believe me...despite having an almost 10K descent going into Keene, most of the course is up.
I've ridden the whole course 6 times and am constantly impressed with just how hilly it is.
YOU NEVER KNOW what race day will bring...I saw many folks pass me on the bike only to see them again on the IM walkathon.
If this is your first IM, relax and don't hammer the bike. If it's not...experience should tell you what to do. Being in NY should give you the chance to ride the course before hand,if you haven't already.
If the weather is good...it will help. If it's cool, you can probably go harder. If it's hot...all bets are off.
I am insanely jealous and wish I had sign up...I love the race.

This will be my first IM and of course the mind is racing with the possibilities, but based on everything I have heard/read, I need to relax on the bike - not to say I need to go slow but don't get ahead of myself b/c it is a long day. I am looking forward to the challenge and to see if my work has paid off....thanks all
