Wow is right. I heard that it was a kid doing the swim - didn't know it was that young of a child.
It is an impressive accomplishment. Tho, as a parent, seems like a pretty risky thing for such a young kid to attempt.

Boy, I'll REALLY be embarrased if I have to get plucked out now!

Speed hurts; how fast do you want to go?

Kids are amazing....they always in some way or another pull some athletic stunt like that....
A good reason to hit the pool earlier tonight and do some serious swimming...hahahhaa

BluStang, I didn't realize you were here in Dallas. I did Playtri too. And the girl is actually 12 years old, but USAT lists her as 13. Also, she didin't win overall for the men. Just overall for the women. I'm not trying to take away from her achievement...just want to be accurate.

I was about half-way through the run when she passed me. Me and this other guy both traded looks as we saw her age written on her calf. We thought for sure that she must be 21 and that someone made a mistake and transposed the numbers.

Amazing is all I can say.

What tri do you have planned next? Maybe the Disco?

To do that swim at any age is great...
If you have kids or had 'em you have to ask yourself the basic question...Is this the kid or the parents who push to have their child do this sort of thing?
For years I've seen kids doing things because the parents pushed them to do it...
Parents belittleing a kid because they didn't make the play or their 500 meter swim time is "still slow."
The 13 year old girl did something impressive... but what was her motivation...?
Is this a sign that Triathlon is now soooo mainstream ? Whats next...Triathlon leagues?
Tri practice that you have to shuttle the child to?
Kids at this age often try new things as they expolre who they are...
For many parents, however, its about fame by proxy.

I agree with Anton. I can hardly believe that this kind of thing is something a child will want to do by herself. And I think this sort of thing can harm one's childhood at some level.

he also runs a 2:55:00 marathon and can sustain over 25mph on the bike for over 120 miles before he begins to sweat..

(im thinking about all the shows I have on my TiVo still to watch, and how good that pint of Chubby Hubby looks in the frigerator)

Anton, good point. My daughter is really interested in triathlons. I found myself pushing her for awhile until I had a conversation with one of our local tri-gods, Ahmed Zaher. I really respect his opinion and he opened my eyes about a lot of things. In addition to burnout, he explained the physiological effects on her growing body.

Until that conversation, I had full intentions of entering her into a couple of sprints this year.

Now she is doing kid's specific triathlons and she is having ten times the fun. There is no pressure (on either one of us) and she trains as little or as much as she feels like. In reflection, I realize that part of me was trying to live vicariously through her and we are much happier now.

I don't want to take away from these young people's achievements either...but I too am not so sure it is good for them.

the kid is here from AZ and has been working w/ a swimming/tri coach for some time. Part of his training has been swimming up to 2 hrs pretty much every day :). The news hounds have been interviewing him like crazy the last few weeks. It truly is quite an accomplishment.
