Ever get stuff thrown at you while biking?

I was out on my bike yesterday(brand new~!) and something hits me so I take a glance back and I see this cookie sheet looking thing just as a car is passing me. I say cookie sheet because it sounded metal when it hit me, was fairly large, and square. Got me with a decent amount of force. I could have swore this car threw it at me out the window or some peice of it flew off at precisely the wrong time. The road was busy(55mph) so I didn't stop and go trekin through the field looking for it.

You guys ever get hit with anything?

Never gotten hit. Had some kids throw water ballons one time and tons of kids yelling as they go by and scaring the sh&t out of me. That was Norcal. Since being in Central Oregon I haven't had any problems. Drivers are pretty aware of cyclists here.

Ive had 2 situations that would fall under this category....

The first one was my roomate. He has a motorcycle and he was comming home from work as I was finishing up a ride. Well he turns his bike off and coasts up to me.....I didnt hear him at all......and he flew by me as close as he could get.....i didnt see it comming....i almost ruined my tri shorts

The second one was a few races ago and the bike in front of me shot a rock up at me.....Im used to getting hit in the face or even swallowing a bug to two but this time was different. The rock shot into the back of my throught! It was lodged there for a few seconds before I could hack it up

I have a friend who was hit in the hand by a half-full beer can throw from a passing pickup truck. Ended up with about 20 stitches. Luckily she was able to keep control of her bike and that it didn't hit her in the face. It happened about 10:00 a.m on a Sunday morning. No matter where or what time you ride there's always a jerk lurking so we all need to be aware and ride defensivley.

when I was in college the townies would throw coins and beer caps at us while cursing. there was not a healthy relationship between the liberal arts college at the conservative churchie town to begin with, but the townies just really hated the cross country guys. we never understood it.

I've never been hit, but have had trash type things tossed from a car at me.

There's been some moronic hoodlums in the West LA/Culver City area throwing rocks and things at cyclist in the area. Be careful out there...

How about being intentionally hit by a CAR? This is a road rage incident that took place a couple of years ago at our local meca for cycling, jogging, sailing, marathons, etc...

Ya, been there done that. Cookie sheet, Wow! no. but I have been peleted by idiots in a car passing in the opposing direction with an apple once; hit the down tube but missed "me". Another time a kid threw a snowball and hit the bike. I hate people like that.

But keep your wits about you...get a license number if possible and description.
It's assault plain and simple...at least here in Maryland. If you feel in any way threatend...call the cops.
Of course..make sure YOU wern't doing anything to break the law...like running a light, riding in the middle of a lane...etc.

jsoder- That is really scary. I'm glad that the guy wasn't too badly injured.

Well, today i rode in an 80km team road race(like the team time trial) and during the race my team was assualted by plastic soda or water bottle accompanied by yelling from a passing vehicle. No one was struck but this was the first time that I have actually had something thrown at me.

I have experienced many horns, yells, and "hand signals" while riding on the roads.some drivers down here just don't belive that cyclists have road rights. At least there aren't many people down here, unlike CA where I used to live.

there was a lady here in Norman, OK who got shot at and hit in the side with a BB gun. luckily it didnt hurt her too bad. she sped up and eventually caught the teens at a red light. she exchanged words with them, got their license number and the kids got in trouble. not sure what kind but the kids did get arrested for something.

I had a water balloon thrown at me once. I couldn't get the license number and did not have my cell phone, but I was only a few blocks from home when it happened so I did call the police to report it. (I was not the only cyclist targeted).

I've had the "yelling out the windows" thing happen about 4-5 times in the past few years.

Just today someone tried to run me and my riding buddy off the road enough to push us off the road and in the ditch while yelling get off the road and on the sidewalk you fu*kers, luckily my partner threw his water bottle at their car, bunch of kids too. They sped off too soon to get their liscense plate.

Also on my way over to his house, while biking, 3 different people yelled at me. Damn it was a bad day to bike I guess. Sometimes I just hate people.

I think that the people who harass bikers should be punished to ride 5 days a week during rush hour and see how they like it.

My friends and I got flipped off by two fat kids in some SUV. I wonder what is going through their minds when they think to do things like this......"hey dude check it out....those people are in shape...lets give them the bird!"

I actually laughed pretty hard when that happened

I think ALL drivers should have to spend 5 days a week riding a bike during rush hour before the can get/renew their licenses. I've run across the jerks just like all of you have in my 2 years of bike commuting (luckily nothing thrown at me).

But it's the one's not paying attention that really bug me. Everyone seems to be on their phones or eating while they are driving these days.

I agree with that…at least the ones that yell obscenities or honk at you know you are there. The ones that have no clue because they are talking on their cell phone drinking their coffee and cut you off (or worse) are the ones you really have to watch out for.

No Good Deed Goes Unpunished- the car passed way too close to be by accident so when the car got straightened out, up went my obligatory middle finger salute. The car screeches to a halt, reverses, burning rubber, and stops. Meanwhile, I am off the bike an removing my shoes.
The driver is a male about 30 with his 5-6 year old son.
Before Dad can get out I go to the boy's open window with a shoe in each hand. I tell the young boy in a soothing voice that his Daddy is a very stupid man and that he tried to run me over with his car. The boy is listening so I ask him if he sees my yellow shoes. He shakes his head. "Your Daddy tried to run me over with his big car, I am taking my shoes off so when your Daddy gets out of the car I can kick his ass."
Daddy spins out without comment. Five(5) miles up the road here is Dad, his son and the nice policeman. Dad don't like hippy bikers on his road and don't care much for dem speed limits either.

Once while on a ride and climbing a steep hill a bunch of high school kids went whizzing by me honking and way too close. Up went the bird (there were 4 of them and one of me...instantly thought I was in for it) and the driver slammed on the brakes and veered off the side of the road to wait for me. Unfortunately, he veered a little too quick and too close to the curb on the side so when his front right tire hit the curb it exploded and left a nice big taco looking dent on his front wheel. Just laughed as I pedaled by and kept on going.

I am lucky enough to not have had anything throw at me while on my road bike yet, but one time on my BMX bike as a kid I had a roll of toilet paper thrown at me.

I had some guy the other day though saying, "Nice stop, nice stop" all because I blew through a stop sign when there were NO CARS AROUND!

I have been hit, but fortunately it was only a water bottle thrown from a SUV full of teens or young 20 year olds. I was pissed!

The scarier folks are the cars that swerve toward you or get right up next to you and scream. It sure breaks your from being in your "zone".

I honestly looked for a bike jersey that would have a logo from a police department or something. Someone else suggested having the image of an UZI on the jersey to look fairly real. I think I'd stick with the police dept logo...

Wow.....I always had the idea we had bad attitude here in GT but after reading all your stories I have to say I´m surprized!!!

Never thought you guys had to deal with that kind of stuff in the us. I have never heard of a person attacking like that a cyclist here.

The incidents you hear about come from lower cultured people truck drivers etc. but never have heard of anybody shouting to a cyclist, driving a nice car near to a cyclist, of showing a gun to a cyclist.

I guess we have other sort of problems but people in general are not so hatefull.

Ride with someone too. If someone gets hurt you won't be lying there by yourself.:D

It's really a matter of physics.
I try to be positive and say that they didn't throw it at me...they were just getting rid of it and the object and I just happened to occupy the same space at the same time.
I have shared the space time continuem with cokes...spit... a deer leg and a Buick.

On another note, I read that 1 person's solution to this is to wear a jersey that prominently features the U.S. flag. Apparently, people who think nothing of trying to nail a living, breathing cyclist with all types of projectiles will show more respect to a fabric representation of Old Glory. (Obviously, this applies in the USA only, I could see this not working too well elsewhere). I'm thinking of trying it next season.
