What type of shoes do you wear for your off-road tris?
Normal runners will work fine, but if you'v got trail shoes, then why not...
I wear Brooks Cascadias (trail runners) for foot sections on trails (ARs, off-road tris, etc).

I did a marathon that had a challenging trail section (about 12 miles of rugged trail) - the rest was on bike trails. I used my New Balance M907OR

I'm on my second season of Xterra racing. I wear racing flats, Asics Gel-Dirt Dogs to be precise, with Yankz. I love them. My feet do get a little sore if I hit a rock head on, so I wouldn't train in them. I've never done an offroad race where I felt like I needed a lot of foot protection. I've only done up to 7 miles in the Trail Dogs, so if I was doing a long trail run I would definitely consider a proper trail shoe. Most of the Xterra pros also race in flats.
If you have narrow feet, the Puma Trail fox are actually pretty neat. My girlfriend's sister does ultra-running (up to 50 mi so far) and swears by Montrails. I haven't yet tried a pair, so I can't comment.
The Dirt Dogs have great venting and dry quickly on muddy and wet courses.
Thanks for the replys.
I have been trying to decide which shoes might be best. My trail shoes -- protective, but heavy. My racing shoes -- not so protective, but light. Or my regular training shoes -- somewhere in between. Perhaps my best bet is probably to find out exactly what the courses are like and then make my decision.

I wear a pair of my training/racing shoes (GT-2100). I just wear whichever pair is dirtier.

Also consider the weather - if it has been rainy, etc - causing you to have to run through mud and slippery conditions that may make a trail shoe a good option.

Why doesnt anyone wear XC spikes? I wore mine for a Mudyd Buddy (yeah, yeah I know thats not hardocore, but still) and even with flat plates instead of spikes, the traction was great.
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
The Dirt Dog comes spiked or spikeless. My friend wears Spiked Asics Outback XC's at Xterras. He loves em. I might give them a shot at some point as long as there aren't long paved sections on the course.
I have the Asics Dirt Dogs too.I have the ones with ribber spikes instead of the metal. I will be using them for my first Xterra this weekend
