Geochuck,

I know you are the resident swimming guru, so maybe you have come across this before:

Lately when I get out of the water after long swims I have experienced strong vertigo for several minutes afterwards. I don't think it's serious enough to cause problems, but it is a little disconcerting, and it takes a few minutes to get my head together.

Have you ever heard of this?

Has any one else had this happen?

Speed hurts; how fast do you want to go?

We all have trouble when leaving the water, nothing seems to work, remember you have been weightless for some time. When we start walking or running out of the water we have to get our balance first. Come out slowly take a few breaths and slowly bring up your speed for the run to the bike.

This happens to me at every race. I have to remember when I'm exiting the water, not to stand up too quickly and to give myself a minute before I start running to transition. Sometimes it's worse than others, but I'm feeling fine by the time I get to t1.

' had the same problem in my first few races i then saw an article that helped, I now find that if I kick harder the last hundred yards or so it starts the blood flowing to my whole body and the effect isn't as bad as it was.

Thanks all for the feedback.

This tidbit from tri-p is particularly interesting because, incidentally, the problems seemed to have started when I switched to this new full wetsuit from Pro-Motion with an extra layer of padding at the bottom to increase buoyancy around the legs. It helps keep you flat and streamlined, but it severely restricts the kick. As a result, I barely kick at all.

I will to remedy this by kickng more at my quarry swim next week and I'll let you know.

Near the end of longer swims I would start explosive breathing, take my arm turnover rate up to about 80 strokes a minute, which means an increasses in the times my legs go up and down.

I did not do power swimming it was a close to the body pull. Just to increase the speed of the pull, frequency of breathing and a faster kick.
