With my first 1/2 Iron or "70.3" four weeks from Sunday (Eagleman), i've been consistently training all winter into the spring...however, this past week, my allergies have been killing me, it's been raining for 4 straight days & is suposed to continue through the weekend, and i just feel fried...i figure a couple days off before my last big training "push" to Eagleman...this being my first full year of training, i've never felt this way before...thoughts???

I find that watching that what it takes clip gets me pumped up. I think it is natural to fell tired when you train a whole lot. I usually
1. buy a book or DVD about training or triathlons
2. watch some type of endurance race/ cycling race, marathon on tv and that gets me all pumped again.
3. Run a short race could be used to get in some good quality training that really doesn't feel like training.
4. A good group ride could help.
5. Go somewhere that the people can't walk or come close to training for a half ironman and think about how great it is to be able to go out and run or ride. Visit with some folks at a nursing home or in a hospital.
6. Go to the dairy queen or some other fast food place and look at all the people who come in and out.

Maybe that will help I don't know... just some thoughts.

Don't be afraid to take 1 or 2 unscheduled "off" days. While 4 weeks out is not the best time to hit a bump in your training, it sounds like your body is trying to tell you something. If this were me, I would focus on getting 2 nights of quality sleep (may be hard with the allergies), taking some short naps, doing some very light, non-training exercise like a hike, and eating right. Then, do like sldotter said and find some motivation, whether its watching a DVD, reading a book, or just visualizing your race. You've been training for a year, so you're not going to lose your fitness in 1 or 2 days.

you're right; as i get "older" i tend to listen to my body more, and so far, it hasn't been wrong!! thx.

I won't hesitate to take a day off, if my body tells me I need it.

When I feel really shot and don't feel like doing anything, I'll try a lot of the motivational tricks mentioned above - the reading the tri magazines usually helps motivate me. Most of the time it's in my head.

If that doesn't work, I know my body is trying to tell me something and I listen. I was scheduled for a brick yesterday, but I just wasn't there, so I took the day off. No biggie, I feel great today and I'm looking forward to a great workout.

Listen to the body - sounds like it needs some rest. It won't hurt your fitness taking a day or two off. You will come back stronger for the final push in your race prep. Just take a day or two and get away from training. Let the head think about other things as the body recovers. Then when rested do some active recovery and work back into your training. You'll be ready and strong for the final couple weeks before your taper.

Get some rest my good friend..
Trainning, is fun, gives us joy...but also a tremendous effort for our body and minds....
Couple of days off, is really going to make you feel great after that....
That will recharge your batteries to keep going...."listen what your body is telling you..."
As Sldotter said....I do believe that watching a movie, wich ever....from Rocky to The Replacements...or what ever movie that puts you in the mood of trainning...
Listen some music.....get plenty of sleep....indulge yourself with some out of an athlete´s diet food.....I don´t know...some pizza, some ice-cream....that works for me too....
Two days of rest...my friend...is what you need....
Best of luck with your trainning.....

thx for the advice/encouragment...i will take a few days off to chill...with crappy weather for the next few, it won't be that bad to stay inside...Santiago, you mentioned the "replacements"; great movie...although the scene that ALWAYS give me goose-bumps is the end of "Major League" when Rick 'Wild Thing' Vaughn enters the game at the end with his buzz cut & thick black glasses, and the crowd goes bonkers as they're playing Wild Thing over the speakers...pretty goofy movie, but awesome scene...

All right, the topic of sports movies really needs its own thread. So I started one:
