ok guys ive been wondering this for a lil while and need to make a decistion between a wetsuit and i guess tri shorts. What are the advantages of a wetsuit? can u swim in it and then take it off with all ur other gear on already? Or during the swim should i wear my Biking jersey with trishorts in the water? or just wait till i get out of the water to put my jersey on? i know these are noob questions just had to ask. Thanks for the help!

The wetsuit will provide buoyancy and warmth.
If swimming in trishorts and no wetsuit - wear your shirt as well - assumming that it fits close. It takes time to put on a shirt in T1 when your body is wet.
If using a wetsuit - again wear your trishorts and shirt underneath.
I will typically always use my wetsuit when legal - whether a sprint or other distance.

RV is right. Wetsuits provide bouyancy and warmth. However, just a bit of warning. Because wetsuits cover your whole body, if you decide to pee in it for warmth, the pee will spread throughout the suit and along your body. This is especially good for extremely cold waters though, so keep that in mind. As for shorts... well I don't really have to explain. hehe.

I love peeing in my wetsuit! It makes it mine...all mine.

Seriously, I liked swimming in a wetsuit - I felt really bouyant and warm, like everyone said. The only thing was that it made my arms a little more tired because I wasn't used to the extra weight during the turnover. But I would say the pros outweigh the cons.

Yea....I usually finish around midpack in the swim but in a recent race I was pretty much the only one without a wetsuit and I was 90th out of the water out of 110. It definitly makes quite a difference.

BUT I know here in Texas they wont be legal for much longer due to the heat...which is why I dont bother to spend my money. I just dont wanna spend all that money on one...maybe 2 races a year.

I recently rented a wetsuit for an event. This was a much cheaper option - only $30 for the wetsuit. I got it from wetsuitrental.com. I ordered on a Friday and it was delivered on a Monday.

This might be a good option for you if you're only going to use a wetsuit for a race or two per year.

I swam in my wet-suit for the first time today (in a pool). I'm a strong swimmer, so I don't "need" a wet-suit but open water swims up here in Canada are c-o-l-d.

My opinion? Worth it because you'll go a LOT faster. Without pushing I dropped almost 10 seconds per 100m doing my typical training routine, even though I probably didn't have it pulled up quite enough to free up my shoulders.

Yes, wear warm weather bike/running clothes underneath. They'll get wet, but its still an advantage at T1.
