What stroke do yall use during the swim in triathlons? I think i might go and do breast stroke for my first triathlon because freestyle will tire me out quick. During my workouts should i stick to freestyle to get it up to par so i can do it the entire time? is it normal to do freestyle all the time in triathlon? seems like you would get very tired. idk just want some insight

Front crawl to me is easier than breaststroke, if you train, train crawl it does start to come easy. Get low in the water, roll those shoulders, don't over kick, learn the proper technique. But if you intend to do breaststroke train at least half your workouts as breaststroke.

Ya, the majority will do freestyle. But there will be many doing the breaststroke. Whichever stroke you choose to do, that should be your primary training focus. Eventually you will want to do it freestyle.
I started off using the side stroke for my tri's. Then spent the off-season dedicated to learning the freestyle. It is worth the effort.
For your first tri - do the stroke that you are most comfortable with.

breast stroke tends to piss off alot of people...every time you stroke or frog kick..you hit someone.
Become adapt at the crawl (freestyle). you'll be more balanced in the water and thus faster...

I think forget about breast. Go to any community pool and in two weeks you could get probably at least 3 half-hour lessons on how to freestyle and as long as your races are sprint, you will be fine. I raced in May my freestyle 750m time with a wetsuit was 16:30. Two weeks ago I raced 750m and made it in 10:50. It was all in the technique drills a coach had me doing. I am really still a beginner triathlete so my opinion isn't very seasoned but I still wouldn't mess around with breast in a race, i do however use it in the pool to mix things up.

cheers

its just a passing groove

Actually,
as a decent swimmer, breastroke is the second most challenging stroke to do properly (butterfly being the most difficult).

I remember doing 200 meter breastroke races that wore me out more than a 1.5k or 5k freestyle swim. Its all about technique and stroke efficiency.

Remember the following three points:
Long strokes
High elbows throughout the stroke
and a kick that balances your body in the water (requires you to spend time on your abdominals and laterals).

Hope that helps. Just keep working at the freestyle, as it is the most efficient stroke we know to date!

Breaststroke is a lot slower and anyone behind you will be annoyed at the extra effort needed to get by you, even if you don't accidentally kick them... Get comfortable with the front crawl as quickly can!

However there's nothing wrong with dropping back to breaststroke for a bit if you need a break or to sight your destination better.

MadAustinite --I've only done three sprints. My first spring I did breaststroke about half of the time; 2nd sprint --I did like six strokes of breaststroke and basically the same this year for my 3rd sprint race. After the first race, I worked on freestyle --took stroke clinics and swim efficiency classes at the Y --held immensely and then practiced what I learned every day while swimming at the pool.

I use the breaststroke mainly to sight in the race and sometimes to get me back in to a proper breathing sequence for the freestyle.

You do whatever stroke you are comfortable in --afterall, it's your race, but the freestyle is more efficient.

With practice, you will get better and your times will improve.

My swim times for the 1/2 mile went like this over the course of the three races:

1st sprint 7/2005: 18:59
2nd sprint 9/2005: 18:00
3rd spring 7/2006: 14:51

Practice, practice, practice. Have fun and good luck!
