So I am training for Ironman Wisconsin this Sept.

The other day I went out and got a new tattoo. It is a fairly small one that is on my lower inner leg. This is my third tattoo, and I really wanted it, so I figured I better do it now.

How many days should I take off from training? I got the thing two days ago, so I am either going to bike or run today, i will keep it covered. I am wondering about swimming. How can i completely cover this thing and not get pool water on it as i want to swim in a few days. I am thinking plastic wrap and some water resistant tape. Any ideas.

I should have done this months ago.

Ya, no swimming for like 14days or so I heard. Could be wrong for the number but I remember something like 2 weeks. Good luck!

At least 2 weeks no swimming. 4 weeks is better if you are in chlorine or salt water. Don't re-wrap it. A tattoo is basically an open wound and needs to heal.

As far as other training, you can probably get going again now. I'm not sure when sunscreen is OK to use, but you definitely want it for any daytime workouts. (Maybe work out early morning/late night for a week or so). I've read that getting sweat into a new tattoo is not good, but I did so about 48 hours after getting one with no real issues.

Alright.. well i have most of my back covered, and am waiting for the timberman to be over before i can get my next monstoroud peice...
first off, congrats..
second, it's not the best timing.
Most tattoo folks get work done between november, and april... it's better them because there is no sun exposure...
-for the first 3-5 days use a medicated ointment like basitracin, but don't coat the tattoo.
-don't wrap it... lust put some lotion on before hand and let it get air....MAKE SURE IT CANT RUB ANYTHING! The scabs will peal anc the you;ll havw a really blochy tattoo.
-sorry but no pool for 20 days... yea, it sucks... that's why i'm waiting on mine.
-14-6 is a good estimate, but since everyone's skin is differenct. 20 days is law!
-make sure after the lotion and pealing period you used a really stond SPF on it... like 45+ otherwise a new tattoo wull fade quickly.

So yea... it would have been better a few months back, it's gonna be a pain, but you wanted it so no fault... just watch out. - b

Thanks All..

I really really want to get in the pool in 4 days. So it would have been a week after getting it. Is there any way to keep it protected under water to at least swim for a half hour?

I really don't want to take too much time off of swimming.

This is my fault, but i did want it now......Ohh well

Listen to Blake. Do not swim this week or next. Wrecking your artwork for life will probably leave you a lot more disappointed, long term, than a swim layoff.

OK DO NOT SWIM FOR 2 WEEKS. You have hundreds of holes poked in you , with dye shot into each hole( I have 3 so I DO know about them). When water gets in to the wound it can 1. cause infection 2. cause the skin to turn to mush, thus messing up the tattoo. Its not worth it really.
Other than that, you can bike and run no problem. It wont kill you to not swim another week if you are conditioned enough to be doing an IM

Enough Said. I will take the time off from the pool. You are right, it is not worth recking the design for life.

I will hit the gym instead and build up a little more strength.

THANKS !!!!!
