Hey folks,

so I caught a disease and had to stay in bed for 4 days and it totally crashed me because it attacked my respiratory system. I'm wondering if it means my whole base is no longer valid. :(

I'm no doctor or sports physiologist but from what i hear it takes months to totally un do good fitness base. Starting back in will be hard, you'll feel sluggish, fatigued (and very p*ssed off) but just do some zone 1 work for a week or so and you should quickly get that spring in your step back, good luck!

it probably feels like it.
take it slow returning, and i'm sure you'll find you haven't lost your whole base.

With a few days in bed because a respiratory tract illness that I assume it was some sort of infection, I am pretty sure you haven´t lost much of your base...
Yes, it feels weird when we go back....you feel sort of weak, stiff maybe, but take it nice and easy...drink lost of fluids, watch carefully your nutrition...and sure you´ll be back 100% in no time....just take your time, and be very very patient....
Best of luck

I went through the same thing a couple of weeks ago. It started as an annoying head cold with a runny nose then moved into my lungs and I was coughing up a lot of gross stuff and was wheezing for a week with that awful fatigue and low-level fever that makes you unsure of whether you're cold or hot at the same time.

I got better and when my lungs felt clear again, I tried returning to my work outs by picking up at the same intensity and distances where I left off but it was no go. I had to slow down and shorten my workouts. I was worried the base was gone too. I scaled back my intensity by about 30% forcing my ego to not go fast. Over the next week, I got better and started increasing my intensity back up. The base was indeed gone but only temporarily and it did not take long for it to return. Give it 3 weeks and I bet you'll be better than before.

When you're wheezing just barely one mile into the run and your legs feel shaky, it does feel depressing like you lost all the fruits of your accumulated hard work but the body bounces back pretty quick. It's a matter of letting it do its work on its own time and not trying to blow a gasket by forcing too much too fast.

You're fine. 4 days in nothing. You may feel beat up when you go back into training, but you'll have it back in less than a week.

Right, a few days recovering will not hurt your fitness - What will hurt it is coming back too soon and then really getting sick. Listen to the body. Rest it when it needs it. And take it slow when you return to training.

I have some issues with my large intestine and have not been able to eat the way I'd like for the last 3 weeks, I had to fast for a day and a half last week and slowly return to my (sub) normal eating habits. I have felt weak and tired for 2 weeks. I have only trained twice in the last 2 weeks and felt noticibly weak. I am fustrated but realize that I'll take some work to get where I was and more to improve my fitness levels as planned. I feel guilty for resting so much...but I'm tired and my body needs rest so be it. Drink lots of fluid, eat healthy and slowly make your return...and have some patients, and smile. :)

It also depends how long you have had been active.
If you have been training for a month and had a few days off it would affect you more than if you have been training and fit for a year or several years.

Just take it easy getting back on your feet. :D

Nothing to it, but to do it

Lost three weeks to a knee problem a month and a half before IMLP in '04. My base fitness level barely noticed...
so after 4 day...you should be fine...just don't come back too hard or try and make up lost workouts.
oh...stop whinning! ;)

Thank you guys for your input!!! I guess I'll be fine. I just been out for a very very short ride with my new bike (Felt F75) and I think I'll be fine in less than a week.

I guess all you have to do, after all, is to cut volume and intensity for a while before training hard again.

Yeah I learned that colds and flus are kind of unavoidable. You do your best to defend yourself by eating right, keeping everything clean, and taking some zinc and vitamins, but when it happens (usually when your friends bring over their 3 year old who wants to wipe his nose on you after he has been touching every other 3 year old in his schoolyard) you just go to deal with it... I mean hell, if Lance can come back from high mortality cancer to kick serious ass, a little green lung oyster can't be so bad...
