Have my first tri (Sprint distance) on Sunday, May 7, 2006
Xterra Spring Sprint in San Diego.
I'm a little nervous about this. I'm 40yrs old and have never tried anything like this before. Hopefully I have everything dialed in. Went on a little (20 mile) easy training ride today - everything felt good. Any advise for a first timer would be helpful. Anyone from San Diego doing this race? thanks all.

Good luck!
Just enjoy the day - take it all in.
Lots to learn by just seeing others at the race.
Have fun...

Good luck, SD Tri.

I'm a former San Diego boy myself. I miss it badly.

I agree wholeheartedly with RV. Just relax and have as much fun as you can.

Speed hurts; how fast do you want to go?

I agree with the others, relax and enjoy your first race.
Most first timers have an unpleasant experience on the swim leg (me included).
IMO, unless you are a strong swimmer, don’t get caught up in the mass frenzy at the beginning of the swim. Pick your spot near the back or outside edge of the group and swim your race. Expect to get bumped a bit but don’t let it throw you off.
And most important...have fun.

The best advice has already been give.....just relax and have fun! Dont be worried about your time or anything like that on your first race. Odds are you will make a mistake lol. But the first race should just be used as a learning experience

i agree about the swim catching you off guard the first time. i am a strong swimmer and i was surprised by a current that made getting to the halfway point incredibly difficult. make sure your goggles have plenty of visibility (i.e. not tinted) and don't fog up.... the water around here is not crystal clear to begin with. if there is a current (might be good to ask or check before the race), take it easy on the hard leg so you can relax your stroke and open it up more quickly on the easy leg. the bike and run are a piece of cake.... don't even worry about those. enjoy! sprints are just plain fun.

Hey SanDiego Tri, I'm not going to be doing the race on Sunday but I will be volunteering. There is another guy that's I know is going to be volunteering during the swim. He will be a swim buddy, its for anyone that needs a little motivation during the swim or a board to grab onto to catch there breath. I hope to see you there. Good luck :)

Thanks for all the responses. I'll just have to relax and enjoy the day. Like they say
"if it were easy, everyone would do it."
Thanks again.
