What not to wear?

Now that I have my first triathlon season behind me I am looking to do some fine tuning and have a couple questions for season two.

I have a tri jersey (no wetsuit) that I struggle to get on after the swim. Would I save more time just swimming in it? I'm a pretty slow swimmer and don't need any extra drag, but I am doing just sprint distances. It may be just a few seconds one way or the other, but i would like to take any advantages I can get.

I noticed a number of racers wearing running caps and visors on the run at my sprint tris. Any advantage to this other than covering the helmet hair?

Thanks,

Goggles

Wear your tri jersey or get a onepiece trisuit for the swim. If you move up to Olys or longer you will wear it under the wetsuit anyway.

I wear hats/visors for sun protection and to keep the sweat out of my eyes. Each to his own tho.

I would rather shave a few minutes off my swim or bike to give me those extra secs in transition rather than risk an uncomfortable run..

A normal tri jersey should be tight on your body, so the drag problem shouldn't be an issue. You should swim in it to save you all the precious time you can in T1. I don't wear a hat during the run. I don't like wearing hats and I like my helmet hair. The hat is a personal choice.

I'll wear my jersey for the swim, but only when wearing a wetsuit. If the rules for the race allow - you could skip the shirt altogether. Or look for a one piece tri-suit.
I like a hat for the run - expecially for longer distances and when it is hot so you can put ice in the hat and then put it back on and let it cool off the head.

the hat is key for me as it protects from the sun, absorbs sweat and keeps it out of my eyes, and keeps me cooler...all good reasons i continue to wear...even though it may not look too cool...whatever

As others have said, wear the jersey in the water or dont wear it at all.

I love my running visor. So much cooler and keeps the sweat out of the eyes. I ALWAYS run with a visor.

Some tri jerseys specifically advertise that they should not be used on the swim (the Zoot tri cycle jersey comes to mind).

I use both hats and visors--though never at the same time-- depending on the weather. A good white hat will not only provide shade & sunburn protection, but may reflect some heat that would otherwise be absorbed by your head.

Speaking of, when are those Trifuel race hats coming, Tribro? ;)

A lot of times I have gone without a shirt completely, and used a number belt for my race number. I like to be as cool as possible on the run.

I understand that bare tops are not allowed this year, though.

I have heard a few things:

The bare torso rule will take effect next year, with the exception of Championship races and qualifiers.

Also heard that it may not be implemented next year. In either case, ask first. If they dont, let the RD know your opinion (respectfully, of course) and write a letter to USAT in protest.

I think you would be fine in the tri top during the swim...the less you have to fool with during T1 the better.
Hats... I wear one on long stuff because I'm as bald as a baby's ass. in short races, no.
Unless it's real hot and then I can dunk it or shove ice under it or what not. Because i have no hair to channel sweat or absorb it...my hat gets pretty disgusting...I get kind of a water (sweat) fall off the bill.
Besides...haven't you noticed?...it's part of the uniform..we all sort of dress the same in a effort to be individuals...

Thanks everyone. I'll try wearing the tri jersey for the swim on my next tri. Then I won't look like a big goof in T1 trying to get that thing on.

It seems the hat/visor thing is personal preference, so I'll have to see which I like best.

Thanks Again,

Goggles

Practice swimming in it at least once before the race. Then wear it in the race if it works for you.

If it's sunny it might be worth wearing a hat.. I've heard that if you squint it can up your heart rate a couple of beats..
That and Sun + squinting can equal bad wrinkles :D

Sweetness!

I hate those that argue in favorof wicking materials. They work fine...untill they are saturated. When that happens, theyre just like any other material: hot.

Amen. I am so much more comfortable racing with no shirt. Especially in the heat.

If they were ever to actually impose a no bare torso rule, I'd race in as small and loose a singlet as I could get away with.
