Heart Rate in the heat
...and I thought I was the only trifuel member in Thailand!!
I will be doing Phuket as well, and before that Koh Chang and Singapore.
You never said anything of your lowest/highest heart rate, which might be the answer to your questions. You ever got them measured?
I do my long runs around 150 bpm, no way I could achieve anything by doing them at 140.
I'm certainly no expert, but based on everything I've been able to glean, the first thing you need to do is have metabolic testing done. Your exertion level at 160bpm is different than mine or the next persons. I know several people who have had this done and were surprised by the results. It might turn out that your optimal zone is 155bmp. At this rate it wouldn't be too hard to slow down a little, would it?
Here is a helpful link from a tri group I know in TX

Am actually going to Ohio to see a friend in August and am having at metabolic test done then so we shall see. It's a real pain because when I walk it slows to 120 almost immediately..... anyhoo, we shall see.
Tribkk, I thought about doing Singapore but someone told me the swim was disgusting and the bike horrendous beacause of all the traffic and people etc. I' ll send you my
e mail as a private message.
... I just did a half marathon in Malaysia in 2hrs 3 mins with a pretty high average heart rate (can't remember what it was, probably 165) ... I'm 39, female, so I should be training at around 140bpm....My comfort zone is 155 and I can trot along at 9km per hr quite happily whilst holding a conversation.
I don't understand the problem. If you're comfortable at the pace and heart rate you're training at, why do you think you "should" be training at a slower HR? Because some generalized formula says so?
Don't worry about it. Those formulas can be widely inaccurate, and as far as I'm concerned, are of little, if any, value to a serious athlete.
Good luck in the upcoming triathlon.

I live in Thailand and am trying to build up my aerobic base for the Phuket Laguna Triathlon in Dec. It's classed as a long distance race and I will be doing the running portion at midday when it'll be 90 degrees with high humidity
Anyway, I've been doing a bit of running for a year now, 10k's, half marathons but I just cannot seem to keep my heart rate down when running. I just did a half marathon in Malaysia in 2hrs 3 mins with a pretty high average heart rate (can't remember what it was, probably 165) and was pretty shagged after!!!!!
I'm 39, female, so I should be training at around 140bpm.
I just CANNOT. My comfort zone is 155 and I can trot along at 9km per hr quite happily whilst holding a conversation.
My question is should I be disciplined and keep my heartrate at 140 even though it means walking every 5 mins or should I accept the 155 as long as I can converse?
I'm just really concerned that I will not be able to handle the run part of this triathlon and will not make it.
Any comments would be appreciated
