Literally.....the bust part I mean! How bad would you want to compete in The Ford Ironman in 2006?

Hopefully not as bad as this guy....I mean I know it goes to charity, but WOWZER!!! I can't wait to see what the other 5 go for  !

Incredible!

Man, I'd have a hard time coming up with the airfare/hotel if I earned a slot for Kona.

There are a lot of people around with too much money but I am guessing since it goes to charity it is a write off for them so it would be the same as giving money to the American Heart Association or some other charity but donating this way they get to race at Kona.

Yeah, there was an article in either IT or Triathlete Mag a few months ago by a former dot.com CEO who bought his way into Kona. He said that the money he paid for Kona would be about the same as he paid for a mountain expedition or an Africa adventure tour and, besides, the money goes to charity and he gets to deduct that from his taxes, so the $30k that he bid ended up being about $20k.)

I can understand it and, if I were in the same situation, I might do the same thing.

But still, it's hard not to get at least a little resentment.

Yes, some people huh? But ya know what? I am of the world that believes we should earn it, just my view. Earning it = priceless.

Well I can tell you he isnt writing it all off. But yes its going to a good cause, so who cares? Why be resentful? Are you jealous that he has the money to donate to a wonderful cause or that he just donated more than you make in a year? There are always going to be people who have more than others. At least he is doing some good with what he has. We are talking about 6 slots out of 2,000. I personally would not even try to lottery in, as I think a person should earn it but to each his/her own.

If I had that kind of money, I would buy my way to Kona without thinking twice!

I kinda think it is envy not resentment. I would have no problem having too much money and putting some of it to good causes and if there were perks that came with the donations like racing Kona, that would be nice.

Sling ~ Trust me, you missed the really fun thread a few months back entitled "Kona Via Lottery". Lots of heated emotion there about the "rightness" of lottery versus earned spots on the starting line...

Not sure if this link gets you to it, but worth reading if you're curious why folks might have some strong feelings on this.
btw, what part of Columbus?

Thanks for the warning, Tamara! I'll stay away from THAT topic from now on. ;)

I live in Worthington, Ohio. Just north of Columbus.

Actually, we just moved a couple of years ago from DC. I still work there, as a matter of fact, and I still keep an apartment there.

I do miss living in the DC area. There is some very good riding there, and I love the area.

Sorry, this may sound bad, but in my view, even if I had a first class ticket to Kona and all expenses etc. paid, I still would not go unless I earned it James. It's just that the whole thing means alot to me. Everyone is entitled to their opinion (I respect that), but for me the race is the "superbowl", or what ever you wanna call it of tris (grand daddy so to speak?) and by my view one should earn it, as we had discussed on the other thread. But, if ya win the lottery, good on ya! Have a great time and I really hope you do all ya wanna do there. For me, there would be only one way I would go and that is earning it. It means alot more when you have given it ALL you have. Just makes the journey so much more fun.

I agree with BBB on this - except I'd take the airline ticket and all (except for the slot) and go and volunteer at the race. Would only race it, if I earned the slot.

I've heard that sometimes companies sponsor people for those auction slots and the advertising. Not sure if it's true though.

Oh Great, the lottery thing again. I learned my lesson on talking about that one as well. Actually, maybe I didn't. I do disagree with some of the philosophical arguments from the ‘kona via lottery’ thread because much of the sport of triathlon is what it is because it is an open sport mixing all sorts of groups. But, personally, my top reason for wanting to race Kona is about the 'course' and the history of the early years there before it was a World Championship. I think that is where people start arguing apples and oranges. I think if you moved the championship from Kona you wouldn’t have nearly as big of a lottery.

He took the easy way out. I mean he could have paid 40k for top of the line coaching, probably trained with some pros, and purchased top of the line equipment to earn his way in. Instead he elected to ebay his way in. To each their own I guess.

Hmmm. Let's think creatively here. If Trifuel can raise about $44,000--about $8 per trifuel member--then it could buy a kona slot at auction. Then Tribro can do a drawing to pick the racer from anyone who contributes gear or race reviews and send the winner to Kona plastered in Trifuel gear.

The runner-up will get a pair of socks! :D

Ha! Very good.
As long as the runner up socks aren't the ranky ones that Blitz was trying to get rid of! :p

Definitely not. Those are for the second runner-up.
