Hi guys was just wondering what people take on their longer rides for drinking?? I have been told you can mix up your own perfect isotonic drink which is better than buying ones over the counter...anyone have any suggestions??

Cheers

I take one bottle water, and one of gatorade (that I mix from powder) or cytomax. I do the strength of the mix ones based on the instructions and taste.

One 700ml bottle of water and one 700ml bottle of magnesium rehydration formula. it helps prevent cramps and rehydrates you faster than gatorade.... at a pinch you can go half water half gatorade.

I have a water back pack - also known as a camel back - which carries 2 litres of water. Plus, I take 1 litre of Gatorade and mix it according to the instructions.

Ive heard that you should mix in a bit of protein with it though as this gets it into your muscles faster - what do others think? What sort of ration would you use?

I usually go with one bottle of water and one bottle of mixture; 10oz gatorade, 10oz water, and 2 scoops of powerbar endurance.

For long training rides (4+ hours) I will take 2 bottles of water - use these when taking gels, and 2 bottles of sports drink (E3 or Gatorade or Infinite) - I will also take powder to mix up more while on route, if needed. Altho wouldn't carry that many bottles (too much weight) for a long course race - max of two.

DEFINETELY need protein for the longer rides. For a complete answer to all of your questions Hammer has an incredible database of scientific articles. Read this article. I'm not saying to go out and use Hammer products, but this is the most complete scientific data I have ever found.

Interesting - it actually recommends using soy during events rather than whey. I would have thought that that would cause stomach distress.

But main point is that protein is essential to the mix.

Also, it says that you shouldnt have simple sugars during. does this include gatorade? if so, then it is actually better to mix your protein supp with a carb mix of glucose polymers. that is very interesting. i usually just have the glucose polymers post workout.
