I don't wear socks. Never had a problem either. Not sure why except to say I must be in the right shoe. However, I might add that I've never done a half ironman, so I don't know if I would develop problems with more mileage.

I've gone sockless for sprint and oly. I developed blisters right where the 1st metatarsal met the 1st tarsal. (On the bottom of the foot, right at the point where the bone sticks out. not the one on the big toe, the one posterior to that). Sorry I'm in anatomy. It's the easiest way to describe it. Since then I've learned some tricks. Duct tape works. Use it on the shoe, not your foot. It doesn't stay on your foot. I've heard Nu Skin works. Also, super glue. Yep, super glue. Put it on the hotspots and let it dry. Make sure you let it dry though. It should stay on for 1-2 days. Make sure your running shoes are tight also. I've only had problems on that one spot on the bottom of my feet. No heel or anything. That was long.... In hindsight, just train sockless. Start out with 1 mile. go from there. I have sissy feet and I could do about 2.5 with no problem sockless, then my feet started to hate me. Bring socks with you on your longer runs and stop and change midrun. treat it as T2 practice. I could go on......

I will go sockless up to a HIM. A lot depends on the shoe. Not a lot of seams on the inside to cause blisters. The only thing that I have done is to have powder in the shoe...eliminates moisture. Just make sure you do some training runs to see how your feet handle it. If you start to develop blisters then stay with socks.

I have heard some folks just coat the inside in baby powder... I've also heard to a trick some people do in rolling up their socks so that it just rolls unto the foot... thought I'd share -b

I wear socks for the bike and run. I prepare my socks for T-1 by putting them on my feet and then pulling the top portion back down over the bottom. Then I leave the folded socks on my transition towel.

When I get out of the water and head to T-1, I only have to pull the bottom part of the sock over my toes and I can basically unfold the rest of the sock over my foot.

I've found this to be much faster than wrestling with trying to get socks on the ordinary way. It also helps to get socks that are transition-friendly. I wear Smartwool micro socks, which are a low sock and don't have alot of elastic around the top to have to fight with.

I only wear socks for the run portion of the Ironman. I bike without socks when I train so it never made sense to change that for the race. For some reason, biking with socks on is really unnatural for me. To make it more comfortable, I usually put baby powder in my shoes before and after I workout/race. It usually helps with my stinky feet also.

Déjà vu, seems we have had this socks vs no-socks discussion before.
I like to wear socks, but that’s just me, lots of people don’t.
For those of you that like to wear socks, here is a good trick for a faster T1 similar to JMA's suggestion.
BEFORE the race put on your socks and then ROLL them down all the way to your toes and remove (put the little sock rolls in your bike shoes). At T1 simply roll your sock up your foot and presto you are good to go. This is much quicker than trying to pull on a dry sock over a semi-wet foot. Takes me about 7 seconds.
