im running Lake Placid for my first ironman.
I have been reading about the race and learning about the different transition areas from half-ironman and olympic races.
Can anyone clarify what actually happens in T1 and T2 in an ironman?

A few questions
1. in an ironman, do most people change into bike shorts in T1, and then into tri shorts in T2? or do people wear tri shorts throughout the race like in an olympic? what clothes do most people change in T1 and T2?

2. do you get your bike at T1 or is it given to you?

3. do you rack your bike at T2 or do you give it to someone? My concern is that I wear orthotics and usually slip out of my bike shoes before the end of the bike so its easier to run to my transition spot. i need to know if i should dismount with my shoes on and then take out my orthotics?

4. do most people stop at the bike turnaround to use their special needs bag? how long are people spending at the turnaround?

5. What should i remember to do in the transition tents?

All advice is appreciated

Ian

1. You exit the water and there are people there to help you get out of your wet suit.
2. You take your wetsuit and then head to the rack where your T1 bag will be hangning (best to memorize where that is, but helpers will help you get it too if you give them your number)
3.Take your bag and run to the changing tent where helpers will help you change and keep your stuff organized. I swam in my trishorts and did not bother with bike shorts, but you can do either. In any case you will want to change now.
4. You will hand your bag to a helper and they will get it all back together to one spot for you to pick up at the end of the race
5. run to your bike and grab it. No one gets your bike for you.

T2. Similiar--
Enter , drop off your bike in your designated spot.
1. Grab your T2 bag and run to the changing tent (this bag is on a different rack than the T1 bag to avoid confusion)
2. Change into your runners(orthotics and all)and if you wish into running shorts, socks etc. Again helpers will be there to help you with your transition-- hand them your T2 bag and off you go to run.

When you are done all your stuff--Wet suit and 2 transition bags will all be racked together at the end of the race for you.

Special needs is all dependant on you. I grabbed my bag with my Accelerade (since thats what I train with) and my pb&j sandwich and took off. You can rest if you want , grab sunscreen from a volunteer etc. Up to you..
For the special needs on the run, I didnt need my stuff so grabbed ththe bag and kept going.(tied the shirt around my waist--I didnt want to toss it if I did not need to--again up to you)

Does this help?

For T1 I changed into bike shorts. I lost a bit of time but was comfortable. I stopped to get my special needs and stretched of couple of minutes.

At T2 you dismount and hand off your bike - you do not rack it- Take what you need off it at this time. I changed into run shorts - took a couple of extra minutes to put anti blister powder in my shoes.

Transition tents can be very distracting. Take a deep breath, stay in "your" race, just becasue the person next to you is rushing doesn't mean you need to. Anxiety keeps your HR high, let your HR come down and enjoy yout time in Ironman. Eat a gel or swig a bit of drink. Again don't rush. Have your plan ready in advance and don't overstuff your transition bags with extra stuff.

Ian...I've done lake Placid twice..'03,'04. I've watched twice.
First after getting out of the lake and seeing the wet suit strippers you have about a 150 meters to run to get to T1..it's carpeted so it's not hard on the feet.
You'll go into T1 and snag your T1 bag from it's hook. If you are lucky or fast a vol (god bless'em) may fetch it for you,but don't count on it.
Run to the changing tent...which can be a mad house and change if you want. I never do. I wear bike shorts all day. In 04 it was cold enough to use arm warmers the first lap of the bike...in 03...it poured rain like hell all day...so I packed an extra sense of humor.
I wear my race day clothes under my wet suit and wear 'em all day. You do what is comfortable for you.
When you leave the changing tent you'll run to get your bike. It' will be waiting for you! Usually at the end of your rack. (Vols again!) You cannot leave your shoes attached to the bike. They have to go in your T1 bag with you helmet, snacks etc...
Run out to the mount line and go!!!
Special needs is at about mile 56..right on Lake Drive..about 100 meters before the area a vol will ask if you want your SN bag...If yes.they will have it ready by the time you get there. DON"T stop right there...ride on a bit then fetch what you need, or ride and restock ditching the bag...
Ride your second lap.
Coming into T2...a vol will take your bike.. you run(with your bike shoes on) to the gear bag racks and grab your bag for T2...run into the changing tent...Still a madhouse...make your necessary changes and zip on out.
Special needs is in the same place as the bike but this time it's at mile13 of the run...
Many people use their SN bags...many don't. I do . My bike SN carries a spare tube and more snacks. That's it. I don't use a run SN bag...I mean ,there is a well stocked aid station every mile of the run for crying out loud!
Make sure you walk through the whole shebang on Saturday. Start at the lake and walk to the T area. walk through...walk around...practice getting to your spot on the bag rack.
Good luck...If you have any other questions let me know.

Ya know, they DID grab my bike..at T2 guess I must have been delirious--or more concerned with the fact that the mens winner was actually FINISHING when I started the run-ahahahhah
