being a semi-poor college student, im trying to buy the most bike for my money

i have searched around and found that what i'd LIKE to have is:
- a bare QR Seduza frameset and forks (no paint)
- a carbon seat post
- crappy, heavy ~$200 rims/wheels for training (and get more expensive, lightweight rims/wheels when i think i deserve them lol)
- quality and long lasting drivetrain (have yet to research this enough yet)
- Vision bars and TT clip ons or equvilent

the questions i have are:
- where can you buy BARE, unpainted frames? go directly to QR?
- would i save money buying it unpainted and unfinished?
- i know how to paint it but what kind of finish do frames require??
- any websites, dealers or other tricks of the trade of saving money?????

thanks in advance!

Most manufacturers do not offer bare unpainted frames. Many do not even offer frame only on anything lower than a mid to high end bike. Your best bet for a bare frame would be a botique maker, and those aint cheap.

Finding places to paint frames isnt easy, either. Most places I talked to didnt even wanna try it. You'd likely have to ship it to a bike specific specialist (theres a few of em around.)

Standard enamel finishes are not tough enough for bike frames. They chip entirely too easy. Most frames are clear coated with some sort of poly blend.

Youre best bet for a frame only is likely ebay. Might find a barely used one.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

Why Bare?
The best place is going to be at big bike swaps like Trexel Town in PA... there are bike swaps there twice a year... i beleive one is comming up soon.... i bought a pair of velomax vistas for training wheels for 110 dollars.. it's worth the trip if you can make it. Besides that Ebay is your best bet... also check out tri shops that sponsor teams and get new bikes yearly... last time i was at SBR multisports in NYC i saw a few frames cheap from the previous year... best of luck

a good frame maker would never put a frame into the market without its brand prominently displayed on it as a means to increase publicity and awareness.

Great place to get discount bike parts to build your own rig:

actually, i emailed QR and got a response and looks like they just might be able to send me a bare frame.

BUT, when i paint it, im definitly gonna put "Quintana Roo" and "True to the Tri" on the frame. I love that slogan (true to the tri).
I would definitly want to give QR credit for their awesome work.

ill let you know how it goes w/ QR.

SO.... what "color scheme" are you gonna use?
(from what I understand - powercoating is the best way to "finish" aluminum)

Just curious..

im going with a similar pattern as the new 2006 Seduza/Caliente models: the 2 tone paint scheme
my two tones will be blue (primary) and yellow (secondary) with all the lettering done in bright white.

and actually the frame is carbon. if you see the bike in person, you can see the weaves of the carbon, looks amazing!!!

ooooo carbon.....

why not just put accents on it then and leave the naked carbon for everyone to envy?

If you are going to get a bare frame from QR and then powdercoat it with QR on it and "true to the tri", why not just get their frame already powdercoated? I can see the customization side of it, but why not do it totally custom? Frames get SEVERAL layers of clear coat over the finished paint for protection. As far as the wheels go, when you get a lighter, better set, get race wheels. Don't get another set of training wheels. Get some HED Alps or better yet, a RENN disk and an aero front.(The cheapest way to do it). You could always get a Zipp disk, but only if you have the cash. If you can't get the bare frame from QR, you can always buy the painted one and strip the paint yourself.
