Gas Prices are so High!

I live in SoCal, and the avg gas price for regular is now 3.15! I read somewhere online, that this price wasn't expected to hit until the Summer, and not in the Spring. This means that prices will be even higher during the Summer.

Along with rising gas prices, I've been finding myself driving less, and riding my bike even more. However, places, such as work, I still need to drive to get there. I was wondering, what have you been doing to avoid rising gas prices?

I commute to work on my bicycle (8 miles each way) 4 days a week. When I drive (to bring in a clean towel, cans of soup etc) I ride my motorcycle which gets about 57 mpg. My husband rides his bike (20 miles each way) or rides the bus-- his work gives them annual passses. We only have to fill up the car once a month which is nice. Its not like we cant afford it, but I at least feel like I am doing my part a little--plus traffic is terrible here.

Right now I commute to Chicago from Philly every week. I blow a lot of fuel in the S80 that gets me here, but after that I walk accross the street to work. I like that. On the weekends I don't have a car. I rent one each Saturday to go mountain biking and run errands.

It'll be 2 years on this May 2nd that I've lived in So Cal without a car. It took some getting used to. I commute by bike to/from work & the gym & my family (farthest is an hour's ride). Anything farther, I do a bike/bus or bike/train combo. You find you just get more organized and more creative on how to carry stuff.

Honestly, it's great not having to worry about the price of gas. I couldn't even tell you how much it is out here in the Inland Empire. My friends think I'm evil for rubbing it in. :D

Over $3 buck here for regular now.As a child of the 60's I saw this coming...We talked about then and no one listened.
A friend of mine ,a petrochemical PhD,was hired by the Saudi's last year to work for their oil concerns...They told him they are down to their last 20 years worth. He's trying to help them stretch it.
Did ya really think zipping around in a Hummer wasn't wasteful?
Lucky for me that I get good gas mileage...and only one of us has to commute.
I would LOVE to commute to work on the bike. 30 miles one way which is no big deal...but the roads here are not safe and leaving the house at 5am would suck! DC area has the third worst traffic in the country.I have a reverse commute and the trains don't go my way in the morning.
Will bike to work on May 19...Bike To Work Day...regardless of the traffic. Can take back roads but it makes it a 45 miler one way.

I am fortunate to live in Chapel Hill where we have a completely free bus system. But when I don't ride the bus I will usually just walk.

The bad thing about gas prices being so high is trying to travel to get to races! I live in a town where I at least have to drive two hours to hit nice races so that is going to put a big time cut in my racing plans for this year do to the budget!! That really sucks!

I'm lucky enough that I can walk to school/work from my apartment. For anything else, like groceries, I used the car. I say "used" since recently, my car went goodbye. I'm thinking about getting a new one, but I'm considering using the bus or getting a commuter bike instead for those longer errands. There is the problem with races though. And getting to group rides sometimes.

i commute by bike, but to get to the mountain or fishing in central oregon, i've got two words for you: "biodiesel, baby!" one tank gets me over 450 miles just with city driving. highway, i run 40-45 mpg...[even at the cost of fuel $3.39 for B99 (!) I actually stil do better than gas...]

Well, I live in Metro Detroit and i work for one of the Big 3. I feel that we started alot of this, by making all the large American SUV's. Now, knowone will buy the things anymore, so we are hurting.

Metro Detroit as no Public Transporation, since we are the Motor city and everyone has about 2-3 cars. So I carpool with three others, therfore cutting down on the amount of Gas i have to buy. When i get home, i ride my bike for over an hour a least.

I hope i am a least doing my part

I'm a telecommuter; so I really don't care how high prices go. I put more miles on my bike last year than I did my car

Speed hurts; how fast do you want to go?

I telecommute as well. My van is currently broke down and I decided not to get it fixed to avoid the temptation of driving. So I haven't driven it for more than a year. Occasionally I'll borrow my brothers car if it's critical, but I mostly walk everywhere: coffee, library, groceries, errands, etc.

I'm tempted now to get it fixed so I can travel to more races to take photos or get to more trails to run with my dog, but these rising gas prices could put a damer on those plans.

Hopefully as prices rise we can push for more bike lanes! I know they are adding tons of new bike lanes on and off the road in my city.

I just arranged for direct deposit to the gas station.
I moved jobs at a ggod time this winter so my usage is down.
I still need my car to take the kids places. Hopefully soon I can work out my schedule to bike to work at least 1 day a week. :D

Nothing to it, but to do it

I'm another SoCal bike commuter (by metrolink and bike... it's about 20 miles total riding each day). However, I'd totally ride the whole thing (about 30 mi each way) if I could get other people in the area interested. I just don't feel safe is some of the areas on my own.

I use my car when I need to, but enjoy my bike commute time.

sldotter has a point...the gas thing can really cut into a racing budget...
I suggest we try to carpool to races when possible. Offer a homestay for trifulers when they are racing in your area...Push race organizers to allow camping on site to cut down on costs (tricolumbia already does this).
Gas prices aren't going back down...Folks in Europe have lived with this for ages.
I have no problem with the cost,as i hope it pushes the US to put more money into mass transit, train systems, and of course, ubiquitious bike lanes. (God, I miss the Netherlands!)
Until then lets help each other to conserve, reuse,reduce,recycle...and race!

My comment was in reply to that... I was saying it's a great idea, and I'd totally participate.

Gas in one independent gas station was $3.60/gal. There goes my dinner for the week. I guess I have to rideshare to work now.
