Training 25yrds vs. 50 meters
I'm always surprised by how many people don't warm-up or at least take a dip before a race.
I always warm-up. I take a page from Joe Friel's book Triathlete's Bible, and warm-up in the reverse order of the events. Run for 5-10'...cycle 5-10'...swim 5-10'.
I try to time it so that I'm ready to go within 5' of the start time. Unfortunately, the race never seems to start when I want it to, so I end up running in place, doing jumping-jacks, or something to keep my blood moving.
Another benefit of doing a swim warm-up, especially early in the season when the water is cold, is that you get some time to acclimate to the temp.
As far as the distance required for me to swim ( cold--no warm-up) before I hit my stride, it is different everytime I swim--but if I had to guess I'd say somewhere between 200-300 meters.

it usually takes me about 200 - 400 meters to get warm as well...so i jump in the water and warm up for at least 5 minutes before the race start...sometimes longer...
Warm up if you can about 300m did it for me. There are very simple land exercise that will get the blood flowing if you can not actually get in the water (never stretch cold). After the warm up get the body covered to keep warm. I have even had massages before a race, I have wrapped hot towels around the legs. But warm up somehow.
Agree with jsoder, I warm up in reverse order. I think the swim warm-up is the most beneficial for me personally.
If you wish to be out front, then act as if you were behind.
I need 200 yds to warmup for the swim. I like to run first and then hit the water shortly before the start.

I've been training on a 25 yard pool becuase that's what's available at my gym. I went to a different facility and swam on a 50 meter pool and had very difficult time until I hit the 200 meter mark. Maybe it's just me but I don't start swimming very well until I hit about 400 meters (is anyone else like that?). I don't understand but the 50 meter swim really caught me off guard because I normally swim at least 1000 meters durning a work out with no problem. Any suggestions on what the deal is, my next race is in two weeks and it's 800 meters? Does anyone swim a while before the race time to get warmed up?
