Ok...so I am following up to my recent "swimming endurance" post because I want some feedback on some of the workouts I am doing and what I should I expect. One thing I know from experience it that I can feel way more confident and comfortable in the pool that on the OW. And although I feel better than last year, its still seems like a different story in the OW.
Anyway I am starting to do workouts like this:
1) 10 x 100 with 10 sec rest between
2) 200m warm up 20 sec rest
8 X 100 with 10 sec rest
200m cool down
And so on...
I am gearing up for the 500, 400, 300, 200, 100 that geo chuck suggests. That seems like a good one. I really, really want to improve my swimming and these workouts are helping. Thanks!!
Several years ago after a very long lay off I would go to the pool and do 2000m workouts twice a day with one day of rest per week. Doing a real mixed bag, eg. swim 5 min rest 1 min then swim five min and continue a varied speeds until 2000m were covered. Next day just swim 2000m, another day all 100s another day all 200s then 400 repeats. In six weeks I was ready to start real heavy duty workouts. As the racing season started then to the open water 1hr swims, 2hr swims, never more then 3 hr swims.
Yes I do like the swim downs from 500 down to 100. It is swimming plus your other activities that will get you ready. It sounds like you are on the right track.
I am having the same endurance problem and I am somewhat of a beginner. I am fine for the first few laps, but then my form goes to slop and I get exhausted. Problem is that the pool I swim in is short (18m) and I am not able to get to the pool all that often (no more than 2x week).
I lived in the north for a few years and the closest pool was 3 hours away. But had an on call job. The only thing to get my training was a set of wall pulleys that I fixed to come down from the ceiling set up in a walkin closet. Had a full length mirror on the wall and stroked in the closet for 2 hrs a day. When the Ice went out of the river I could finally come out of the closet and swim in real water. Ice on the lakes and rivers from Sept to April.
