Recovery time after a race
I usually take the day after the race totally off. I may swim 2 days after the race. An easy bike 3 days after (usually wed.) Maybe a run the 4th day. Sat (the weekend after) is the normal bike (for me a group ride). I took the whole week off after my Half earlier this season. I started up again on Sat. I needed the rest, but could have gotten back out there earlier, albeit slowly. Take it slow. There is no need to rush back into it. Your body is still recovering a couple days after a sprint race and a week+ for Half. Nothing will be gained or lost the week after a race, I'll bet my life on it.
I don't take any time off after a sprint. Saturday is race day and Sunday night is swim practice, so I'm back in the pool on Sunday night after the race. My former coach would give us an easy workout the day after a race, but my current coach generally does not.
After a longer race, of course, I would probably take at least a day or two off.
How much time do you give yourself after a race to fully recover and what does you training program look like the week after the race?I just did my first race of the season, it was a sprint and I did well, improving my time from last year. I took Sunday off completely. Monday I swam in the morning and ran at lunch. Today, Tuesday I am feeling really tired. I don't want to over do it but I don't want to slack off either. What is too much or is it better to allow good recovery time? I feel like I'm in good shape and can handle working out but I do feel tired today and not in the mood for a bike ride in the wind.
Suggestions ideas and thoughts...... :D
it depends on the intensity of your race, your season goals, and your overall fitness level. if you raced at a high intensity level i would give yourself more time for recovery. if i was in your shoes, for example, i wouldn't have gone for that run at lunch. your body needs time for recovery and repair, unless your next race isn't for a few months? but, again, it depends on how fit you are, how solid your base is, otherwise without proper rest and recovery you risk injury and mediocre improvement (if at all) as your season progresses.
It's best to listen to your body. If you push too hard, you're setting yourself up for an injury. Maybe take that tired day and go for an EASY spin on the bike to keep your muscles loose, but not work them too much.
Don't underestimate the importance of rest. Rest and recovery are where your body can reach new levels of fitness.
depends on the race. If its a sprint nothing--lasts less time than a long training run. For my IM- like 3 days and then it was back to easy running. Totally depends on you and what you are used to doing and how you feel.
Thank you for all you suggestions. I was starting to feel like a slacker but I think that listening to my body is a good idea. We raced in the rain too so with the exersion and the weather I think I'll take it easy this week, allowing for recovery and hit it again starting this weekend. Your comments help me feel less guilty and smarter,...more smart....which is it? Heehee. :D
Thanks
