Pre Race Eating
As it is known, carbo loading is great to do the night before. You can even do it a few days before depending on the length of event. Before the event, are you referring to breakfast or right before the race??? Breakfast should be what you normally eat before training. Eat what you normally eat before a Saturday ride. That seems to work for me. How long is your event??? You could pop a gu RIGHT before the start. A powerbar or similar a few hours before wouldn't hurt either. Make sure you drink a lot of water/gatorade (if you aren't already) the week of the race and also make sure you are hydrated before the start of the race. For future reference, try and include as many details as possible in your post so it makes the questions easier to answer ;)
Its a sprint distance and i already only drink water and noncaffinated beverages. How much water do u think before?

Your body naturally holds the elctrolytes/energy for about 2hrs of activity so you don't need to be too extreme. I'd sip on a normal size water bottle. Just one of those sparkletts/arrowhead bottles. You probably dont need any sort of powerbar/gu before the race since it's a sprint, but if your body can tolerate it (you've tried it before??) than you should be fine.
thanks man, ya ill probably suck down a powerbar or sometin because when i usually train ill eat a power bar before a long ride or run, etc. Thanks alot!!

For sprint distances, I try to err on the side of "not enough food". I eat a piece of lightly buttered toast with jam, drink a little diluted juice or tea a couple of hours before the race. .
I try to stay on more carbs for 3-4 days leading to the race but I just keep it pretty balanced. I find that eating "normal" works for me better than trying to carbo-load.
For most events I like to eat a Barilla plus pasta, with marinara sauce and 1/2 bag of frozen mixed veggies(broccoli, carrots, etc..)
Pasta primavera. I drink gatorade throughout the day.
At least 3 hours before race time my breakfast usually is wheat toast with almond butter, glass of milk, which I wash down my normal vitamins and supplements with. I might have a banana on the way and a little gatorade to wash it down.
For a sprint you won't need much during the event.
Maybe a gel about 10 minutes before race time to top off the tank. :D
Nothing to it, but to do it
wow, you guys don't eat much in the morning. right after i get up, i usually chug a glass of H2O cause i'm thirsty as hell when i wake up. For breakfast, its my biggest meal of the day, I usually eat a large bowl of Frosted miniwheats, a glass of OJ, a piece of toast with half PB and Jelly on each side and if i'm still hungry a yogurt. That is usually at 5:15 in the morning, mon-fri. about 2 hrs later, I will eat a cinnamon raisin bagel with PB & honey (the best) and a banana all before 8:30.

Depending on your preference, eating right before a race can be good or bad. There is some scientific evidence to suggest that eating within 4 hours before a race could actually hurt your perfomance. Eating naturally elevates your blood glucose. As blood glucose is elevated it has to be taken out of blood. So basically, eating before the race can cause a spike in glucose and then decline (from it being taken up) which is not where you want to be at the beginning of a race. There is eveidence to suggest that it can help your performance but not as much as the former. That's a fancy way of saying figure out what works best for you. Experiment with eating before training. I have found that eating before a training session is no good for me simply because of the discomfort of having something in my stomach. As far as carb loading, eat some pasta the night before and you may even start loading up some two-three days before, depending on the race length. For a sprint, loading a day before would probably be sufficient.

Im doing my first Triathlon in may and just want to know what would the best thing to eat the night before and also right before the race and how much fluid i should probably have in me. Would Pasta be good the night before and like a power bar before the race work? and i dont want to drink a gallon of water before the race because ill probably cramp up just lookin for some insight. Thanks!
