Recovery Arm???

Here i go again...another swimming question!

As I got out of the pool today an older woman (our local YMCA "know it all") stopped me and started critisizing my stroke. She said my recovery arm was too high and that I wasn't gliding at all. (She actually said that I wasn't gliding "At ALL" about 25 times!) Oh yeah, she said I was swimming like Esther Williams which I take is probably not a complement.

I'm not discouraged because I know I have made great improvement since a year ago. I was wondering if anyone had any advice for improving stroke length and glide.

Can a recovery arm be too high???

To get the glide start doing a little bit of catchup front crawl, then a little front loading, after that just let the hand when it enters hold it there a little longer than normal Walla you will start gliding. You can actually have the elbows quite high. I even like to see the elbows higher then I am doing here http://www.swimdownhill.phanfare.com/album/41256

thanks george,

what do you mean by front loading? i have been doing alot of catch up drill, but i don't know what front loading is.

today i tried to pause my hand in the water as you described and i found my my times getting slower and slower. is this normal? I thought the glide was supposed to help your speed.

There are several theories on what front loading is, my idea of front loading is the balance of weight caused by a slightly slower extention of the arm from the shoulder to the entry this slower movement raises the legs and body which helps in streamlining. Are you sure you are moving through the water slower?

This is how Gordo explains it. http://www.byrn.org/gtips/vasaFAQ.htm

Thanks for the link. I liked those land pictures on the vasa regarding correct form vs. incorrect form. The front loading issue seems a little clearer.

My times increased by 1-2 seconds per 25 yards.( Maybe I was just having an off day.)

I am going to try to relax more during the recovery but still keep the elbows high, front load and pause after entry.
