Building a dream tri bike. Guru chrono. Campy record. Super wheels. Etc.

Still unresolved on the handlebars and looking for the lightest, most aerodynamic combo I can find that has the S-curve.

Ok - No Oval 911 custom for $2500. Not just now, anyway.

But other than that - what is there? The store is pushing vision.

Gracias!

Back again. Since you don't seem to have a budget (besides excluding the Oval's) get the blackwell research bar ($1200). Or you coud get the Vision Trimax Carbon racing Bend. Or the new Zipp Bar. How abot HED s-bend? What about Oval A900? Have you seen the Ritchey Hammerhead? It wouldn't hurt to do some research for yourself.

Yes, back again.

This _is_ research.

Thanks for the list. But is there an actual recommendation based on weight or aerodynamics or both?

I do not own a wind tunnel. I am not an engineer. There are no shops around me that have people who are knowledgeable enough to answer these questions.

Honestly, I'd pay someone to do all of this research for me. It would not be a bad business model for some of you experts out there. Being an unbiased source of info - you sell nothing but info - and get some real testing done. Maybe start a magazine that does real reviews.

The HED, Vision, Ritchey, and Oval are all with in 10 grams of 850g. The Blackwell and Zipp didn't dispay weight. I've heard that the Ritchey is supposed to be very aero. I think that the aerodynamics of each of these is going to be a wash between the ones on the list. I guess it comes down to looks and personal preference. I would suggest not getting the HED if you got the Zipp Z99 wheels. It might not be the best look for your high priced rocket. The Ritchey's look very cool as do the Oval's.

I just check Oval's site and the A900 Upgrade bar is 825g (according to the site, which is most likely off) and is fully customizable from arm rests to brake levers to extensions. That would be my pick if the Blackwell Research is too "futuristic" for you. The all carbon look from Oval is very bad a$$.

Excellent analysis. Will post this sucker up. Fab for Guru is going to take 5 fracking weeks so I have time to get a lot more study in.

Re: 'looks' - kinda secondary. But the bike - I plan to make it black with red and silver accents. Kinda like the nike tri shoes or the saddle I'm using (Bont carbon xxx whatever).

And I do like the Oval products, in general. May go with a headset from them, too.

If you are going with a black, red and silver theme, the Oval A900 upgrade yada yada would look awesome. I would definitely go with that one. I've heard a lot of good things about it also.

I heard elsewhere that several people who used the A900 switched to the a700.

I'm really somewhat confused about what makes the a900 better than the a700. A700 is lighter and looks 'faster' - yet is much cheaper.

The A700 has either upturned or FLAT bars, no s bend. The A 900 is available with a s bend. The S bend makes for a much more comfortable position vs flat. The 900 has intergrated brake levers, whereas with the 700 you choose your own.

Have you looked at visiontech? http://www.fullspeedahead.com/fly.aspx?layout=product&taxid=84&pid=574

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

The A900 is going to have the most amount of adjustability....

There is also the Bontrager XXX Aerobar. I think it weighs in at like 630 grams.

Whichever way you go, you'll have a sweet setup. Try and get some sort of fitting on each bar if you can. Maybe find a shop that has them setup on different bikes and try them on the trainer. Is that possible, I don't know, but it's worth a try.

Yep, I registered the morning after. Thanks.

The guys from Oval sent me a good response. I also had some questions about their fork.

The bont bars look good and would match my seat (what a priss!). They don't seem to have embeded brakes.

Which, if you ask me, is a GOOD thing. If your break handle breaks (crash or something) you dont have to send the whole bars in for servicing or wait for oval or someone to send you parts. You just hop down to your LBS and buy a new lever for $20. OR you can go real high end and get some of those real bling bling stopper levers I have seen as of late.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

HED. No question.

I waited on HED's website all summer after they debuted on the Postal bikes in the TDF. I was one of the first to have the HED bars (serial number 33!). I still think they're the best S-bend for a couple reasons. First, they're the only ones to have a true curve along the entire bar. Both Oval's and Vision's bars have a harsh kind, which isn't ideal, because it means you don't have a continuous surface to grab. The Bontrager bars use HED's extensions, just a different sticker.

Second, the full curve on the HED bars means you can alter what angle your hand is at, AND (and this is the best part) how far out you're grabbing. When I'm on a slight incline, I hold the bars further back, and can sit further back on the saddle to generate more power. When descending, I move forward more to get the benefit of the more aero position. HED's S-curve gives you a freedom of POSITION that no other bar gives you, and for me, that makes it invaluable.
