51-55F water temp
I did one 1500m swim in rough 52 degree water. I had no neoprene hood or booties but sure wish I did. There were a slew of DNFs, and it took me 15 minutes before I felt my feet again. The air temp of that race was in the 70's-80's, so I had the fortune of quickly warming up.
If the race directors allow booties, you might want to try to secure a pair. 400m shouldn't be too bad, but running to transition on dead tingly feet isn't fun.
If you are a decent swimmer, you should be generating enough body heat to handle the temp. If you have not yet swam in really cold water, try to go at least once before the race. Your body reacts in ways that you have to compensate for. You really have to focus on proper breathing as your lungs will naturally want to tense up. Focus on just doing your thing. Force yourself to maintain a regular stroke pattern. Fight any urges to breast stroke or stop as you will lose body heat.
For 400m you should be able to just go at it like a madman (or woman) and you'll completely forget the water temp.
I wore one at CaliHalf on Saturday. It was my first time and I was VERY glad I did, very suprised at how warm it was.You may also consider wearing your armwarmers under your wetsuit. I've done this many times and you'll save a good bit of time in transition, otherwise lost to wrestling lycra onto wet skin.
Thank you - I'll grab a beanie before the race and wear it under my cap. the arm warmers tip is a great one. I hadn't thought about that. and congrats on Cali Half IM.
I'd definitely go with the hood. The whole race is pretty short, I honestly wouldn't worry about arm warmers and such, you're going to be going hard the whole way.
The CalHalf last weekend was similar cold and they actually allowed booties and neoprene surf socks because the water was so cold (didn't find this out until the night before when I didn't have my booties with me), so if you do have them, consider bringing them. I wasn't able to find a neoprene cap, everyone was sold out right before the race, so I just wore an extra silicone swim cap under my race cap and that helped me immensly. Arm and/or leg warmers will probably be a good idea, although a friend of mine wore hers under her wetsuit at the half last weekend and wished she hadn't because then she was cold and wet and her warmers were as well. Your swim will be much shorter, so all this info is probably overkill, but thought I'd share. Good luck.
I see the time value of armwarmers under the wetsuit, but getting them wet seems to make them just cold and almost not worth wearing for the bike... Rich, did you find they dried fairly quickly? Did it make the bike even colder for you?
If it is that cold, full wetsuit, neophene swim cap and booties or neophene socks.
If you put some vaseline on your hands, face and any exposed skin it will help too.
If you can practice before to get a feel for it, do so. :D
I just did the CA half this past weekend like a few others and for a short swim like SF, you should okay with no booties or gloves. I had just a 3mm surf wetsuit and 2 normal swim caps, I survived. 2 swim caps would be a good idea. If you can get a neoprene cap, that might be good. If it is a beach start, expect it to be hard to breath the first few strokes because of the cold water. It will feel like your heart rate is at 250 because you can't get a good breath, but it will go away after just a few strokes. Just stay calm as you will be fine in a few seconds.
makes sense... thanks!
If I ever have a race like that I might try that... or just sticking the armwarmers on my handlebars and pulling 'em on once I'm going...

I'm doing the Oxnard Strawberry Fields tri this weekend and the local surf reports show the water temps in the low 50s.
I haven't swam in water that cold before. low 60s is the coldest I've been in and I remember it was pretty cold and it took me a bit of time to get used to breathe in that. I have a full Xterra suit. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to grab a neoprene "beanie" hat to wear under the rubber swim cap or if that's overkill. I'll probably put some ear plugs in as well during the swim.
It's a very short swim (1/4 mile) but with the weather being in the low 60s, I'm also worried about being cold for the rest of the race.
I will be wearing my sleeveless jersey and tri shorts under the wetsuit. I will probably wear socks for the bike and maybe bring some arm warmers.
Any thoughts or tips? Thanks!
