i was warming up for a 5 mile race sunday morning; it was cold and windy. half way thru my warm-up run, my calf cramps up. (i've NEVER had this happen before). so i stretch it out, and jog some more; the more i warmed it up, the better it felt.
i run the race (PR in nasty conditions); calf felt fine. i cool down, then go to the post race area to go get a massage. i tell her my right calf is cramping; she then proceeds to POUND on it for 30 sec's to work it out.
all day it's tight, and i take a low dose muscle relaxer when i go to bed; well i wake up the next day with a HUGE bruise on my calf. i have not run on it since sunday; and plan on resting it 'til thursday, but the bruise is what i'm questioning.
thoughts???
Could the bruise be a result of the pounding??
I can´t guess another reason why!

so far, that's what some other people have said...i'm hoping that's it...
Cramps happen. In cold weather it could be from your muscles not being warmed up enough, or nutritional issues.
The bruising can be from the massage.
I would stretch and maybe use a dowel or the stick to self massage, and apply some heat to loosen the muscle. :D

jaymac- pay attention to this. I cramped badly for 15 years and sometimes would have a black and blues as a result from long painful cramps. One of these bad cramps brought what was probably the true problem to light- deep vein thrombosis. The DVT was just brushed off as bad cramp soreness until I had this lung congestion that would not go away. After a group run where the slowest runner in the group had to wait for me on a hill and all the grief he bestowed on me we figured it out- pulmonary embolism. A couple of days in intesive care, a week hospital stay and now daily coumadin will protect me from this potentially fatal condition. Genetically predisposed Factor 8 to clots.
In addition to coumadin I have a script for quinine which I use after long workouts/races.
I still have minor cramps in my hands and feet particularly when I swim but the drugs do their job. Just something to think about if you cramp and bruise as a result.
