Trifuel, I would like your help in keeping a local race alive. It seems some members of city council do not want to see it continue. I don’t want to see our sport marginalized because a few don’t realize the large growth and following for triathlons.

Please help by sending an email by following the steps below.

Thanks in advance.

To All Friends that Support Sport;
I don’t know if you have already heard, but the City of Newport Beach has ended the Newport Beach Triathlon - America’s longest running triathlon (see attached press release). If you are an athlete, this is a great loss. Even if
you don’t consider yourself an athlete, but you do support outdoor sporting events and athletic competition, I encourage you to help. Please support the effort to get the Newport Beach City Council to reverse their decision. To show your support, I urge you to follow the simple 4 Step/30 second process below.
We only have 4 days to organize or we may forever lose the longest running triathlon in America. Please send this e-mail to everyone you know (no matter where they live) and let’s send the City of Newport Beach Representatives our message of support this “Thursday at Three. The goal is to send at least 500 emails this Thursday - so let’s spread the word really fast!!!!
Thank you for your support,
Bob Mortensen

I urge you to overturn the recent decision to end this important American
sporting tradition.
The race is scheduled for May 21st 2006, so it is critical that you reverse
this decision quickly.
I urge you again – do not destroy this event! If we lose it this year - it

Here is a short from the race director of the Newport Beach Triathlon.

"The city manager personally told me on the phone last summer that "he could not understand why we would hold such a small event" even though we get 800-1000 dedicated participants, hundreds from Newport Beach. He personally told me and put it in writing that we should look for another location outside the city. Whose view does he represent besides his own? We have never had a safety mishap or a recorded traffic problem that has ever been presented to me or anyone associated with the race in 28 years. We have brought a positive message to those who participated from 9 years old to 81 years old. We donate to a worthy charity, UC Irvine Rowing, whose base is in Newport on Shellmaker Island and generate positive economic impact for the city. We close the roads for less than 2 hours on one Sunday per year with the roads entirely open by 9am. "

Does this bother anybody else? I don't want to see the race end because a few individuals in government thinks it's pointless without hearing from the community. We are sending emails just to have the city hear us out. They haven't met with people who want to keep the race alive. Personally I think this a serious shot to our sport. New Port Beach is a well known locale and if we lose this race then we have lost a great race location.
