Hi all,
There's a multi-day ride that orginiated in the Texas Hill Country, appropriately named Hell Week. The Texas one is usually in March, and while I have yet to do it, I plan to next year to prepare for IM CdA.

They have expanded their Hell Week rides to other locations, including Wisconsin and Florida. I thought I'd share for any of you out there in Tri Fuel land who are doing IMs in either place. May be good big-week volume riding time for you on the terrain similar to the race.

Has anyone done a Hell Week? How did you prepare for riding consecutive days of 75+ miles? (I've done 100 one day and 80 the next but that was only 2 days worth.)

I haven't done any "Hell Week" type of multi day rides, but as far as preparing for it, I'd ride multiple days in a row. For training purposes I don't think you'd need to be doing 75+ miles every day, but maybe consistant 40-50 miles. Being in a group is A LOT easier than riding solo, so the hell week ride would be easier than just riding solo. Keep that in mind.

I'm planning on doing something similar as part of my training for the 06 Wisconsin IM.

The ride covers 490 miles in 7 days. Distances range from 55 to 75 per day with an optional century ride on the first day (which I'll most likely do).

My prep will basically include lots and lots of riding with specific rides dedicated to hill workouts.

My plan is to do the ride on my tri-bike. On 3 of the days I'll run immediately after the ride. And when I can find a pool, I'll swim in the afternoons at least a couple of the days, if not more.

200k ride with 10,700 feet of climbing. I really hate hills so I'm trying to learn to embrace them. This ride should certainly qualify for a Hell ride. 20% of the people didn't finish last year. I'll do this ride on my road bike. My thinking is that if I complete the ride in-tact then the bike leg of my IM will feel like a piece of cake.

That river ride looks awesome. I just know the guys over at Gordo Byrn's site do some mega miles (more like epic miles) and figure it can't hurt.

But I have to smart about it b/c I'm not an elite age grouper and March is still pretty early in the season, even for Texas. So I guess I will have to incorporate some trainer work along the way in Dec, Jan and Feb.

I'm currently doing a group spin class with trainers at my LBS. The workout is structured, posted on the board in the front and you just work. It's tough but I'm also getting much stronger!

Ha ha. I'm doing about 15 hours of riding over 3 days at the end of the month, but I've done it before, so no problem. And mountains will be included. I am also doing another big riding weekend (40/120/40 miles) in early August on the IMWI course. Did this last year, too.

You just have to be to the point where you are a VERY fit and strong rider to do these things, nothing more. And really practice perfect nutrition pre- during and post-ride, or else you will feel like crap the next day.

Generally, I preceed these riding bouts by a lot of mileage, as much as I can put in, so you effectively build up to it. These are not the sorts of things someone who has only been riding 1-2 years should attempt, IMHO. But if you've been doing IM distance for 2+ years, you can probably do one of these things with caution.

Just make sure you bring the right gearing for the course!
