How many ironmans each year?
It’s usually a rule of three with IM.
Lots of people I train with say you should not compete in more than three per year at the amateur level.
Generally I’ll do 2 IM races, but when the season opens I do 2 Olympic dist to get the feel back, 2 half IM and 2 Full IM, it's a VERY WISE idea to spend some time at the Olympic level before tackling am IM if your only new to triathlon. Then work up to half IM because the full IM is nothing like you will have experienced if you jump from Olympic to IM and you don’t want to kill yourself first time out.
Speed Kills. Strength Punishes
The IM is a lot of work to train for, and takes a long time to fully recover from (allegedly, I will know in September I guess).
For me, I am going to stick to one IM a year, unless I qualify for Hawaii, and fill in my race schedule with shorter Olympic distance races. They are huge amounts of fun, and don't take nearly the taper/recovery time of the long distance races.
My rule of thumb, do whatever you and your body feel you have the time, capabilities and commitment to do. No-one can answer this better than yourself.
I'm doing a couple sprints and Olympics to start off my season then 2 HIM's and then my IM and finally finish off with a sprint.
That is my plan for this year and would like to repeat it next year as well - then re-assess.

I personally don't like heading into an IM without having done a HIM. Not that HIM is anything like the full; rather it is motivating to complete the long training day of a HIM. Aside from that, I generally don't do shorter stuff unless it's during a taper, but I'm breaking my own rules this summer, since I'm doing IM Brazil in May, and then my 2nd IM won't be until Oct./Nov. IM Brazil is the A race. I'm doing a sprint, a HIM, a 60K bike TT. I also always try and do the 2-mile open water swim races (which do no physical harm) as part of my summer training.
One IM per year is plenty for most people. Once you've built up true IM base, you can "do" 2 of them--to do well at both, they need to be at least 12 weeks apart (again, for most mortals). You need to decide how much social/family time you are willing to give up if you decide to do >1 IM in a single year.
YMMV
Thanks for all the advice!
Whos HIM? Is he fast? I hear chicks dig fast guys.
HIM is Mr. Half IM. Yeah, chicks dig fast guys. Unfortunately, the reverse doesn't seem to be so true. That, however, does not stop me from wanting to get faster.
I thought Chicks dug guys that took it slow and could go for a long time? ;)

I have just started racing triathlons and am wondering how many races someone that competes in ironman distance does each year? It doesn't seem like you could do very many and be competitive in each one. If you mainly race ironman distance races, do you also do shorter distance triathlons also? Any advice appreciated.
