How vain are you in selecting your gear?
I am a work out clothes addict (ok, a shopping addict in general, and need an intervention). That being said, I need new stuff constently. Just bought two new long sleeve running tops from Brooks :) . Get to try one out tomorrow morning on my long (19 mile) run !
Always have to match. Colors and logos...well, sometime you can't help with the logo's or anything else for that matter but it is nice if it would! I love yellow and my bike is yellow and black so everything I have now is yellow and black. I love New Balance (their shoes especially) so any tops or shorts and what not is NB I get. Stupid yet it makes me happy.

I am a bit of a brand hore! I love my shoes to be Brooks or Asics that match my clothes.
I try to get all my running and cycling apparel by Nike and get the matching shorts that go with the singlet i just purchased! when it comes to bike i usually takes cues from the man himself Lance Armstong.
On Race day you cant go past the Orca P-flex wetsuit and the 2XU trisuit
It all comes down the the saying "As long as you look like you know what your doing, everything will work out fine"
On reflection i have expensive taste, if i get a girlfriend my bank balance will be shot!!! :D

Running clothes are meant to match??? I have enough trouble just finding running shorts with a zip pocket (big enough to hold a door key, some chocolate Gu, and a security swipe card) and dry-fit t-shirts that are wide enough across the sholders
I like for things to match and be of colors that I prefer.
The road bike that I recently purchased is various shades of blue and a little bit of black and white. The only other bike that I found that I liked based purely upon the specs was bright yellow, black and a little red. Needless to say I went with the blue. However, almost all of the other stuff that I bought ended up having shades of blue as well in it. But I would have loved to get everything in pinks and reds.
I figure if it's ugly why would I want to spend the money and look ugly in it.

It's fun to match where it works out. I have a gorgeous cannondale multisport bike that is a special Hawaii edition -- which means it is painted with flowers. And yes, I have the bike shorts that match it.
However, it's not top priority... I have tons of comfy gear (or stuff I was given) that doesn't match as well but that gets the job done. I tend to use the favorites when it comes to looks on race days and group workouts :)
All my bike and running shorts are black, so they match whatever is on top.
My lid is red and black, and my bike is silver, blue, and black. Right there you can see how much it matters to me. I like clothes that fit and are comfy. As long as the colors arent too...off... I will wear whatever.
I dont go looking for the coolest and best looking gear, I look for the value point where weight, performance, and price meet. For this I have spreadsheets. My new MTB was assembled on Excel before I ever ordered a part. So instead of "vain" when selecting gear, I would classify me as "analytical."
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

Chocolate GU is the bomb, i think it may be the best part of triathlon

I love my chocolate Gu, especially the chocloate espresso one.
But you've gotta be careful mentioning chocolate Gu around here, before you know it you'll have the Trifuel Girls Gone Wild show up at your next race, hold you down, and shave you with your Gu and some cool whip! (see 'that' thread for details on the versatility of chocolate Gu :D )
Clothing not so much... Functional - not necessarily ever making a fashion statement with my race/workout clothes. (Ok except for the Trifuel singlet).
Gear is another matter. Want the best that I can realistically afford. Focus for gear is in terms of performance and weight.

vain about clothing no Vain in general yes
I don't care about clothing, my personal favorites are fruit of the loom t-shirts prefably the ones I've had for 6 or more years. But I am vain in how I look to others i.e. on long runs if I am dying I try to look strong or quicker if cars are coming or I see another runner. Then after I cry like a little gir  oh wait I guess that's not cool
Whatever I can find on sale....and, I tend toward the most obnoxious colors I can find.

Because there's nothing like Lycra to make you look wonderful ;)
This thread has also made me feel much better about my own vanity, thank you Trifuel!!
I just wear a pair of my favorite cut-off blue jeans, slightly yellowish old fruit-of-the-loom tank top, and work boots that I duct-tape to the pedals of my 60lb beach cruiser bike. :D

How much do "style and looks" count in selecting a piece of race gear or clothing?
For my first tri, it didn't matter at all but now, I find that things like "colors" and other asethetic factors count more than I want to admit.
