How do you keep your feet warm?

I am doing the California 70.3 half-IM in 3 weeks and just recieved notice that wearing surfbooties is illegal, contrary to what I've heard from people who've done this race in the past. I am extremely prone to cold toes in the water, as the last Olympic tri I did, I had numb feet until I finished the run. Now I'm getting pretty nervous as to how my feet are going to survive a longer distance at a colder time of year. Does anyone have any advice as to how to 'legally' keep your feet warm for a 2k Ocean swim? Thanks!

you could try to rub your feet down with vaseline or lard... However, this could turn out to be a hindrance to you once you put your feet into your biking shoes and they keep slipping out. Maybe you can keep a soapy towelette ready in T1 to wipe your foot down once you get out of the water.

If you are stuck w/o booties for the swim you may want to consider toe caps for your cycling shoes. You may be worse than me with cold feet but when I did the Big Kahuna, which is a half IM in the ocean by Santa Cruz, my feet were numb until about 10 miles in on the bike. I didn't wear socks so the caps were a savior. My thighs were colder than my feet (which never is the case) during that race.

Buck up and deal with it! ... just kidding.

I'd go with the toe caps like CyclingFan suggested. Besides that, maybe socks. I'm more worried about my face than my feet. Don't worry though, I'll be there too and I'm sure it's going to be bloody cold. That's half the fun ;) ;)

I tend to find that I warm up fairly quick if really moving in the swim. And the ocean down here isn't horribe right now -- I swam in it the last 2 weekends and although cold on the feet at first, my feet weren't horribly numb afterwards.

It is too bad about the booties. How did you find out it is illegal? Did you ask about any of the neoprene socks? (to me the booties are the ones with soles, if they include the socks then sorry)

Could just be me, but I always find my kick less efficent when swimming with either booties or neoprene socks. Used to dive 2x a week in a tank at work, and when it came time to finish, i through my booties out so i could swim better and speed up surface clean up.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

A little prep before hand will help.
I would use some vaseline to coat your feet which should help out a little.
Have a baby wipe or something to wipe off you feet when you get to the transition area.
Have a bucket to rinse off your feet. Use hot water from the tap if a bathroom facility is available. If not get a big thermos of boiling water and bring it with you.
A quck dip in the warm water will help dethaw your tootsies :D

Can't help you much with the cold feet, but I may have an idea about them being numb the rest of the race. The numbness is probably more attributed to coming out of the cold water and having shrunken feet. Strap them into your bike shoes, they warm up and swell and your shoe is now too tight, thus the numb feeling. After about 10 miles into your ride, try adjusting your shoes and see if that helps with the numb thing. I had a similar experience with a particulary cold olympic, my feet didn't regain blood until I put on my running shoes that are pre-tied with yankz for all occasions.

What if you had some nice hot water in a thermos in T1 and you used that to clean off the sand off your feet once you're getting ready for the bike?

Oh yeah. Sorry... I didn't realize that.
To clarify, obviously, I meant that in a sexual way.
