OK, I have bee in the tri scene for going on five years and I hate to say it but I know zilch about wheels. I just know that on my ride yesterday I almost blew over (on my stock Alex 400 rims).

Does anyone have some basic reading on wheel types, what's good, etc. I'm not looking for $1700 aero wheels, as I will be riding my Specialized Allez Sport with clip-on aerobars again this season. (When I hit my goals at the end of this year, my gift is a new tri bike for next season :) ).

So I don't want to invest a ton but would like to explore my options for some training/racing wheels that will keep me upright when I'm riding in a 25mph crosswind. ;)

I just don't even know where to begin....

Thanks!

Typically, the more aero going forward the less aero going sideways (wind). Look for a more shallow rim and less aero spokes if you are mostly in heavy cross winds.

American Classic makes some decent low profile rims for a reasonable cost, as well as a deeper rim racing wheel.

As for material on wheels, I'd read all the reviews.

in 25mph winds, youre going to get knocked around. I was being tossed about yesterday a little in 20 mph winds. not fun, no.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

i had the same problem with the Alex 400's now i just ride your run of the mill bontager Race x-lite wheels. They have less spokes so it makes it easy for the wind to blow through the wheel (duh!)

they are light and about $750 USD

Thanks for the feedback. I did a little reading on Road Bike Review yesterday and these Neuvation M28 Aero wheels got great reviews. They look like good, aero wheels for a great price.

The others were the Easton Circuit. I really don't want to spend more than about $350. I'd rather save the $ toward a new tri bike.

I'm racing Buffalo Springs 70.3 in June and if the wind there is how it's been in Dallas, I'll be thankful for something more wind friendly.

Any experience/comments on either of these wheelsets or other good ones in this lower price range?

Mavic makes some pretty good wheels at a lower price range..

RACE:
Ksyrium (Elite & SL) $700-$800
Cosmos $300

you can get any of them much cheaper on ebay
