I was wondering if the wetsuits that everyone wears during the swim portion are Tri-Specific or are all wet suits just wetsuits. I've never done a tri that I've needed a wet suit (thank god for warm water) but I do own one that I bought and used for scuba diving, I was just wondering (now that I live up north) if that would work? Thanks
Tri specific wetsuits are more flexible in the shoulder and have different panels for increased buoyancy and hydrodynamics.

Tris also have different allowed neoprene thicknesses (although I can't remember right now what they are), and not all scuba/surfing wetsuits fit that part.
Like RV said, also for shoulder flexibility, and designed to be easier to breath in while swimming (by neck cut/fit).
