Welcome Tankfootlou,
Thanks for joining us. I heard NYC is getting crazy snow, hope it's not cutting into your workouts too much. good luck with your first tri, keep us posted on your progress and training.
Hi Tankfootlou,
Welcome to trifuel. I am in Northwest NJ.
There are a bunch of small local sprint tri's which might be something to think about. Let me know if you want more info.
The Danskin in Sandy Hook is a great event. I have been down there to watch. There are a lot of people there so you might want to get your feet wet(pun always intended) before you do that.
I am looking to get into the NYC Marathon this year by lottery, but also hedging my bets and doing 9 events for a guarantee next year.
You might want to check out the NYC olympic tri this summer in July. It starts in the Hudson and ends in Central Park.
Maybe I'll see you at one of the NYC events. :D
Nothing to it, but to do it
Thanks for the warm welcome, guys!
The snow here isn't too bad, but then again, I haven't tried running/cycling outside yet, weather wimpyness and all.
Beads - I'd love more info on local tris, thanks! I thought about doing the NYC one, but it looks kinda intimidating and I don't think I'll be able to swim that far by then. I might volunteer instead though. The Danskin one looks a lot more beginner friendly...

Hey tankfootlou,
If you can watch or volunteer at NYC I think it will be a great motivator. Over 2000 athletes are in it so you can see a triathlon on a grand scale.
If you are up for it there are some sprints in the North NJ and Upstate NY area. There are couple in Harriman State park, and I do one at West Point every year. Very well organized, and great experiences. I'll let you know my tentative event schedule when I figure it out.

Cool, thanks. I'll add driving to the list of things to work on before then. (I live in NYC b/c I suck at driving.)

hi tankfootlou,
welcome to the site! i haven't been around trifuel much lately cause we just moved from long island to mid coast maine. we're still settling in and things are crazy. :(
check out the races on eventpowerli.com. they are run by team total training and my coach steve tarpinian. they are great races all over long island. i did them all last year and my favorite was the mighty north fork. it's a beautiful race through wine country and it's not too hilly! i really hope to come back during the summer to do some races.
Also the montaukl lighthouse sprint, vytra tobay, and the jones beach sprint tri are awesome too!
good luck with you're training! You CAN do it!!!

hey beads,
i was really thinking about coming back for this race but i'm afraid the urban waters might be a little too skanky for me. did you do this race before? if so, what was you're swim in the hudson like?
just curious.

I have done it the last 2 years. I love this event.
The water is pretty skanky and there was even a dead NYC rat floating on the coarse last year
(along with the usual flotsam and jetsam)
I just try not to get too much water in my mouth.
(I am up to date on my vaccinations as well)
The bike is cool and the run ends in Central Park.
There are lots of participants and they do have a pro field.
Great Schwag too!!

Hey Amy,
Thanks for the info! I'll definitely check out those races.
Good luck with training up in Maine - I remember going to the beaches there when I was a kid. Even in August the ocean water was freezing! :)

I hope I'm doing this right...
Anyway, a year ago, it never would have occured to me to do a triathlon, but after biking and running for a while, I figured I ought to learn how to swim, "just in case" I ever got the urge to tri. Then a customer in a local tri shop convinced me that I could respectably complete a sprint tri without drowning. Then I stumbled onto this site when I was bored at work. So here I am! Goals for this year include doing a sprint (maybe the Danskin one), a fall marathon, and enough NY Road Runners races to qualify for next year's NYCthon.
Oh, and I ride a Lemond Reno named Cinderelly. She says hi too. :D
