Frustrated w/ injury
I hear ya... I got bad tendonitis in my knee some years ago, and it took FOREVER to get better. I still feeling it some biking -- different cleat placement helped.

Did you see a doctor that specializes in sports medicine??

I did. He put me on prednisone and some other mega anti-inflammatory for one week but we all know how nasty that stuff is. Ive gone back to icing, strecthing, ibuprofen, and rest. My coach has been giving me ultrasound treatments as well. Ill start the bike ride and then 30 min in the pain is back and my knee gets stiff and really sore. Its been pretty tough. I know that in the big picture this is pretty minor, but i really miss being able to train. Thanks for your feedback I really appreciate it
You may need some additional rest.
If you are hurting at 30 minutes maybe start with 20.
Continue the icing.
Work your way up slowly.
It is frustrating but in the long run(pun always intended)
You will be better off.

It can be really difficult to stand down for awhile but sometimes it's necessary. Trust in your base and don't start back, when the time comes, too hard..trying to play catch-up.
I missed THREE WEEKS, two months out of IMLP 04 with a left knee problem. Was allowed to swim with no kick. No biking or running...Made it to IMLP and bettered my time by 20 minutes.
Follow Doc's orders..you are young and want to be doing this 20 years from now.
Best of luck!

thank you all for the feeback and support. That was exactly what I was needing. The little tri-devil that sits on my shoulder egging me on was starting to get the best of me. Isint it funny how much we can struggle with just resting and taking some time off :)
i was out for SIX MONTHS with ITB friction syndrome, listen to your doctors and when you get back you will love every session that much more becuase you are just happy to be out there.

The advice for some down time is good. And have you had a good bike fit done? Maybe a shim under the cleat could align everything a little better.
Another alternative you could pursue is Active Release Therapy. Here in rochester I have an ART specialist who's hands are golden, I've gone in with some major pain and left pain free in one session. The tendonitis might take a few visits to work it out, but it could be something to pursue while resting it. My advice if you would look up an ART specialist is to find one that works primarily with runners/bikers. My doc in here focuses on runners and has seen it all. Good luck!

Have you established if it is the bike or the run that seems to be causing it??

So far....it has only been with the cycling. Running has been fine. I had the bike shop re-check my fit and they said it was as perfect as it could be; cleats were ok too. Im just struggling with the rest piece and how to gauge trying a light workout without pushing it too much. At this point, im off of the bike for a few weeks and see what happens. Great idea about the active therapy, I will check into that today!
Just to double check, I'm not referring to the standard bike shop fit. A good fit can take a couple of hours and involve actual measurements, laser levels, etc. You need to determine that everything is the best it can be.
I agree with Jamie about the bike fit.
Also as far as you cleats go are the pedals tight or do you have some float ?
Something may be restricting your natural pedal stroke and causing the problem.

How are you on an exercise bike without clip on shoes?
You may also want to try an elliptical trainer.
No impact and it does use some of the leg muscle groups involved in cycling

I understand your frustrustion. I am dealing with a hip injury. I have not been able to run since labor day and bike since Thanksgiving. It may be a few more MONTHS before I can bike and run again. This year's triathlon season is probably shot. I am shooting for doing some in the fall. All that sucks, but there are a few upsides to the injury:
1. My wife is happy with my break from obsessive training
2. My swimming is going really well and I can see improvement week to week
3. I have been hitting the weights and getting much stronger which will help when I return to training
4. Mentally and physically my body is enjoying a break
I suggest that you take more time off. Don't push to come back or you'll turn an acute problem into a chronic one.
Thank you for all of the responses, I feel so much better realizing that I am not alone in this. The plan now is to take the next month off try to run a bit when i can and stay in the pool/weight room. Im hoping that ill be ready to race come April. stay safe and healthy out there guys :)
Hey Traveler,
Injuries are the low of low! One thing I have learned the hard way is: time off now is less than time off later because you did not take time off originally!
I know it sounds silly but really the month off now is short where as you could be out for monthS if you have to have surgery becasue you pushed it too hard.
Also remeber when it is time to get back into things, don't expect to be at the same level as when you took off. If you are running 7 minute miles, expect 9's to start out with!
It is totally normal and you will get back to the 7's in no time.
Keep us posted please!

This past summer when I asked my Orthopedic Surgeon when I could run again he said: "Once you get to the point where there is zero pain, wait two weeks, then run." I didn't follow that advice. I had a tri coming up so I began running again when it felt a lot better but not when I had zero pain and definitely not 2 weeks after zero pain. I now have a chronic problem and I have been out of action for months.
oh nooooo. Thats my biggest fear and even w/ that I still was doing some "light running". I finally have seen the light and just swim and have revved up my strength/core training. But man is it hard.....my peanut M&M addiction is really having to take a back seat w/ the reduced activity. :)
well it's been almost 3 months since the pain started and after.....one session with a PT who specializes in Trigger Point I have had no pain/discomfort in my knee. The man has magic hands I must say but I really cannot say enough about how amazing this treatment is. Thanks for the info fellow trifuelers!
Traveler- I been suffering with shoulder tendonities since the age of 16-from swimming, recently it has been acting up and I tried something new which has worked a great deal. Acupuncture, I'm feed up with my doctors telling me the same thing, rest and anti-inflamatories added with P.T.- but a few sessions of acupuncture and my shoulders have not had any pain in a long time.
Traveler--please read my recent article about taking care of yourself here on trifuel. There is a link to the very best trigger point book that EVERY triathlete should own. It will show you how to work on yourself in addition to your massage therapist or other provider who can do trigger point work on you.
The other important thing for knee health (and I've experienced my share of knee issues) is to have strong, bullet-proof quads. PM me with your email address and I'll send you what I do for quad work that seems to keep my knees trouble-free.
Then, even with strengthening and stretching, we will all develop trigger points in our muscles throughout our training. The trick is to have a regular routine you follow (I do it as part of my stretching) to check trouble areas (mine are my quads, piriformis, TFL, quadratus lumborum, soleus and iliocostalis) and address things before they turn into bigger problems.
Traveler- I hear ya!
I've been suffering from ankle injuries for quite a while now. In the summer of '99 I tore all of the ligaments on right ankle and had to have it repaired the spring of '00. After 4 months in a cast and 2 months after that of resting it I was finally able to start normal activities.
Then the summer of '04 I tore all of the ligaments in my left ankle. The dr that saw me refused to do surgery and said that it just would have been much better if I would have broken it, I then proceeded to tell em to do so. :) he didn't find that amusing.
Finally now I'm starting on a normal routine. Granted, it hurts like hell, but I realize that eventually I'm going to need surgery, it's just a matter of running through the pain and doing what I want or just sitting on the sidelines.
Good luck in your eadeavours! :)

I have been dealing w/ tendonitis in my knee that came on after doing a 1/2 marathon and then having a hard bike ride the following weekend. Its been almost a month and I despite taking several weeks off, I continue to struggle w/ knee pain on bike rides. Have seen a doctor, etc etc. I'm feeling really frustrated as my mind is so ready to get back into training and prepare for my 1/2 IM yet my body is saying no-way jose. This tri girl needs some emotional support :o
