Any Cancer Survivors? Need advise

I would like to know if there are any cancer survivors on here? I just found out that I have testicular cancer and I am going into surgery on Monday. I am not worried about the surgery or the fact that I have cancer because I am fortunate to have had testicular over any other type. It is a very highly curable disease and I will bounce back just fine.
What I am worried about is how soon I can get back on the bike! At this point I don't think I am going to have to go through Chemo. A little radiation possibly and should be okay. I am very depressed because I had to take most of the season off last year due to a torn calf muscle and I was just getting over it and starting to up my training a little and BOOM this happened. I have put on the pounds from being dormat and I was excited to train hard for this upcoming year.
So I am determined to get rid of this junk in my body and put in the miles.

I would love any advise on how soon I can expect to bike after this surgery, I would love advise on diet. I took a day yesterday to pout and gourge on bad food and feel sorry for my self but I need to start eating right. is a low calorie diet good, low fat, low carb or all of the above?
:D

Sorry to hear about your health problems.

It probably goes without saying, but if you haven't read it already, pick up a copy of Lance's Its Not About the Bike.

Best of luck.

Yes, sorry to hear your news. Good luck with the treatments.
Impressed with how quickly you have gotten your attitude focused on where you want to be and how to get yourself recovered and back to training. With that spirit no doubt that you will work through it and bounce back! I would think your Dr. should be able to line you up with a nutritionist and a PT to work on your recovery - be sure that they understand your intentions. The body will need some recovery time - don't go too hard too fast. Again best of luck...

Mamps,
Sorry to hear of your health issue. I am a Cancer Survivor...15 yrs now. I had Uterine/Cervical Cancer...had surgury and chemo. I am fine now. I second what the others have said and know that eating healthy and being involved will go along way in your treatment. I don't know how quickly you will recover, everyone is so different and treatment now is so much more advanced than when I was sick. I hope that you keep us involved also in your progress. Just wanted to let you know you have support here. Others know more about the medical issues than I do, but I know that they will give you their wisdom.

Dude,

I am sorry to hear about the testicular cancer.
I would second Hitmans suggestion about reading Lance Armstrongs book. The exercise and diet will help you recover.
Look at what he did after beating cancer.
You appear to have a great attitude. Keep it up.
You will be an Ironman in no time.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you. :D

Hola amigo Mamps:
I am with the other guys who pot before me...My best wishes and prayers with you man...
The great thing that I can tell from your post, as a doctor myself, is that I can tell that you have the attitude to fight...and for sure to caome back stronger...
I always advice my patients, all of them, to keep up with the exercise...to be active...
Of course you are going to rest a little, after the surgery, and the radio therapy...the area that the doctors are going to be working is particulary unconfortable for the patient...but also heals fast....
Diet wise, always a good healthy, and balance diet is what your body is going to need to heal and repair...to be strong back again...I think the use of the service of a good nutriotionist/dietist, will be of great help.
But on top of all my friend, don´t loose that heart that you are putting on this....don´t be depressed, what puts you down, will make you stronger....

Thanks for all the support! I love Lances book and I am going to read it again while in the hospital for some additional motivation.

Chrisrun, I am also in OH (columbus). Good to hear that you have made a great recovery.

Doc...that is perfect advise. Thanks. I am glad to hear that excercise is okay during treatment (obviously not straining the area of interest). I have not really asked my doctor about this becasue we are waiting to get some results from other tests in order to get a game plan together.

In general, no prayers for me please...there are little children that I saw in the Onc. office with cancer that need them a lot more than I do. I appreaciate the thoughtfulness but I am going to be fine.
Any other advise is welcome and appreciated but please hold the sympathy, my wife gives me plenty of that...lol

I do have to tell you all, I had a meltdown yesterday and did the whole sympathy thing for a little while and to kick it, I got on the net, went to livestrong site, and ordered me a hat and some more bracelets...I am SO excited to get it in the mail, my wife and kids tease me by saying the mail man just left so I run out and look but no box. It is funny to see a grown man get so excited over something so little.

Mamps,
I saw that you were in Columbus. They have great Dr's and stuff up there. If you get the chance and hang at any of the HPF races maybe I'll see ya' I'm doing a few of those. They are fun races to compete in and also fun just to hang out at. Take care. And good wishes to you and all (there are plenty of blessings to go around for you and them too ;) ) Oh and I agree with your wife and kids, it is kindof cute about the Livestrong stuff. I wear my yellow braclet all the time.

Dear Mamps,

I promise not to send you sympathy or pitty. I will also not pray for you, but I will send you a little of my fighting spirit, and hope you know that you will be in my thoughts!

The funny thing is about the braclets, (I ordered them too) is that Lance took every turn possible to avoid having the US postal service deliver them, or have a profit therefrom. They come only via USP, and if you have a post office box, they won't deliver. He is a great man, but I wouldn't want to be on his bad side.
Take care, anytime you feel like letting out frustraiton, just do so here in Trifuel, will will listin to you and try to be there for you.

All the best, Blitz

Mamps,

I just saw this thread....So, you have had surgery and I trust it went well!

I am a three time survivor...Liposarcoma in my lower right abdomin in 1998, 2001, 2004. Did the radiation for 6 weeks, but did not have to do chemo....I have a high chance for conitnued recurrance, so every workout and race are cherished.

I actually found my third tumor 2 weeks before the Chicago Marathon...decided not to tell my wife and do the race...she wasn't mad because she understands my drive!

I need to thank cancer for bringing me to triathlons. I was out of shape and didn't think I had time to run (have been a runner since high school). Now I have done 5 marathons and have my first half IM this June....tons of other races too.

Bottom line....FOCUS on recovery. I used to dream I was swim/bike/running or lifting while I was recovering from surgery. I actually knew my wife and doc would be mad at me for working out...then I would wake up....kind of insane and funny at the same time.

I wear yellow as well and plan to apply for the Tour of Hope this year. Check it out if you haven't already.... http://www.tourofhope.org/index.php

I will be thinking of you and sending you my strength. Stay strong and be aware of your wife's feeling throughout your fight...it is truely harder on her than it is on you....She wants to help you, but she can feel helpless. Show her love and kindness even when you are hurting either emotionally or physically.

Hope to hear from you soon!! Livestrong!

Hope everything is going good. I just registered for this site, and saw this thread. I apologize for not reading all the replys. I was diagnosed with testicular cancer back in may of 2003. I went through 4 sessions of chemotherapy and a lung surgery. I wasnt riding at the time (just running and swimming). I only stopped running for the testicle surgery. I never stopped my regular oush-up, sit-up, pull-ups and other upper body work-outs. My diet never changed (except when I was in the hospital throwing up everything that went down the pipe. I will say the one thing I hated hearing "Atleast if your going to have cancer, you chose the best one". Nonsemenomus (hope thats spelt right) testicular cancer has like an 85-95% cure rate (I believe the highest out there). Its been almost three years, and no testicles later..............Im still doing great. I still see an oncologist every 3 months, and get testastarone shots (no testicals) every 2 weeks. Well enough of my jibber jabber. Any questions feel free to shoot.
