Hello all,

I started to compete in triathlons last year. My first one was the Appleman Tri in Littleton, MA. I was hooked. I competed in 3 more before the season ended.

This year I signed up for a half ironman (FRIM MAN half iron) in RI. The first leg is a 1.2 mile ocean swim. Last year I did all my training in a pool (3X a week). I think to perform better this year I will need some open water time.

I am hoping people will know good places to get some open water time in once the weather warms up in New England. I am looking for any suggestions (lake or ocean).

I live in Taunton, MA so any suggestions near here would be great! Thank you

i like the southern edge of massachusetts. specifically, horseneck beach in westport[U] is 1 hr door-to-door from boston, has the warmer gulf stream waters that newport has (since it's just across the bay), and has cheap and never-full parking ($35/yr, $7/day). for you, in taunton, it's even closer.

the beach is about 2.5 miles long and curls around to westport harbor.

i find the water temperature is about 15 degrees warmer than the nicer beaches on the north shore (singing beach, crane's, wingaersheek, good harbor, etc).

i know a lot of other tri people head to walden pond to swim the 1/2 mi across. but i prefer the ocean for some reason. like you, i prefer long, open swims without a million flip turns

maybe i'll see you there... if not, i should be at the firm-man in RI later on in the season

I was looking at the weather today and noticed the weather is getting warmer!! I can't wait. Hopefully in a couple of months I will be in open water. Also, I will be hitting saddle in a couple of weeks. Anyone know good bike paths that are long enough for a 1-2 hr ride.

I know I have been to the east bay bike path in Rhode Island. It is good. Right on the water. The only thing is that is gets REALLY crowded in the summer. But it allows for a good 1 1/2 ride. (14 miles one way)
