So I was reading an article on bicycle maintenance and it suggested that you replace your shifter cables and housings every 6 months and your brake cables and housings every year. The 6 month frequency for shifter cables AND housings surprised me because I had never heard this and I didn't realize that the cable housings could wear that quicky.

What do you folks think about this? How often do you replace your cables?

I'd do it at least once a year. The housings will rust and break down, causing poor shifting and breaking. Dont be cheap! Doesnt cost all that much at all if you look around.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

my lbs gave me a hard time about keeping my bike clean and free from grit because it gets into the cable linings and screws with the sensitivity of the operation of the derailleurs. (I ride in the rain almost everyday) he hasn't grilled me about replacing them yet...i guess i'll hear about it in 6 mos or so... :)

At least once a year - Riding on the trainer seems to shorten the life of mine - sweat trashes them faster than anything else. Even with towels etc on the bike - I make it a point to have all the cables replaced when I transition from trainer to outdoor riding.

Na, whoooey! No need. I ride in so much rain and see that things can get pretty soaked w water but usually just take things apart run WD40 through the cables and they have been fine for 1.5yrs now. Regular maintenence IS highly needed though. Just soak/squirt the interior with WD40 about once a month and you will be fine. But replace if you want too. I just think that they say that to be in "top" form. Your choice of course.

I do the WD/lube to the cables probably once a week when I clean the chain - I don't think that rain in the real bad thing - again for me and my corrosive sweat - it does a number on anything metallic. Good thing my frame is carbon fiber!

OK, you spend $2000-$5000 on a bike, shoes, pedals, entry fees, etc. but you want to put your trust on a $3.00 can of WD40? Spend the $10-15 it costs to replace them once per year, it's a simple operation.

Drive a manual? Ya knwo when the clutch is really worn down, but you dont really notice it, cause you've gradually become used to the clutch feeling the way it has? Ya replace the clutch, and wow-wee! Same with your cables.
