Breathing rate vs HR when running

I am not sure that I am breathing correctly when I run. This may sound weird but it seems that my breathing rate does not match my heart rate when I am running.
My HR will be WAY HIGH but my breathing doesn’t seem that heavy.
I am a pretty crappy runner so that might be part of my problem.
On the bike and the swim my breathing seems to be in-line with my HR.
Could improper breathing while running actually push my HR higher than it would be if I was breathing properly?
Has anyone else experienced this? What do I do about it?
Or am I just crazy because my running stinks?

I would think that breathing oddly would change your HR.

I know that I can make my HR drop by focusing on and changing my breathing (in for 3 steps, out for 3, or similar). I find by regulating the breathing, it helps the HR.

I also find that I can have a relatively high (by percentage of HRMax) HR, and yet still find talking to be comfortable.

Have a conversation with someone or yourself. This will help determine non-scientifically how your breathing relates to your HR. Keep the numbers in mind when you can have easy, medium and hard to talk conversations. They should translate fairly closely to the specific HR ranges you are running in at the time.

On occasion i can get ahead of myself in breathing while breaching tops of hills or just from having too good of a time or having certain Paul Oakenfold tunes blast thru the ipod.. Take a deeper breath than normal and hold for a few extra seconds, repeat a couple times until the breathing calms down.
