I currently have a 52/42/30 crankset. I'm having a world of a time trying to find replacement rings for the 52 and 42 tooth rings. I DON'T want to pay full price for them so I've tried going the ebay route. I have come up empty. Now to the question: Is it possible to go to a 53 in the front and a 39 in the middle ring and not have any shifting/derailleur problems???

Looks like Shimano speced that combos, as did truvativ http://www.pricepoint.com/detail/14302-100_TRUED5-3-Parts-56-Cranks/Bolts/Truvativ-Elita-Double-Road-Crankset.htm

I would go any higher or lower than that.

As to price...Triguy has great info..
as to the question of a 53/39 jump....
That is a big jump...I tried it on my bike last year and while it worked "ok" it wasn't that good.
Had to use a dog fang to keep the chain from jumping off on a regular basis.
Went back to 53/42. I have been doing my own work lately so I thought it was me...went to see a local wrench and he felt the jump was too big.
Have you considered dumping the triple and stepping up a double crankset?

Just went and counted, I have the 53/39 count on my double. It works ok. I have dropped my chain twice to the inside. Twice in a year aint too bad. I wouldnt go for the combo on a triple, but if ya pick up a double crank, why not. For how cheap I am seeing that combo around for... Jensonusa has the ultrega 6500 for $70 $70!!!

How about a compact? A 50/34 gives a wide range of gearing. I just read that Ivan Basso used a 50/34 in the mountains for last year's TdF.

I've been happy with a triple Shimano 105 - 52/42/30 crankset. It's nice to know the granny gear is there on those occasions where the hills are especially steep. Some of the sprints out here in Cali have some pretty good climbs.
