I work in the corporate world. I just completed a training seminar on ethics and confidentiality and they say they can control and monitor from time to time the use of internet and email. Half of my work time is to do legal research on line and other tasks. The company home page is open in my computer all the times. I log in Trifuel during my day but it doesn’t interfere with my performance (I have visited trifuel every day for the last 2 years and my work reviews are above expectations as well as my triathlon performance, yeah baby! :) ) My questions are:
a)can they monitor from a remote area what web site I’m visiting at any determined time?
b) can they know if I am participating in a forum i.e. when I send a comment to a thread. Do they see it, do they know?
c) same as b question for blogging
d) can they see my emails?

I connect to the internet thru a proxy server so I bypass some of that.
Can you do that??

I used to litigate employment cases for large companies. From time to time, employee web usage and/or emails were at issue. If you work for a company with a reasonably sophisticated IT department, the answers to a) and d) are yes and yes. Lots of companies save all email to backups right now, either for a set period of time or permanently, even if you have deleted it from your inbox. I don't know about b) and c).

You might be able to get privacy in your emails by using a web-based account like yahoo, gmail, etc. Or maybe not. I'd like to hear an IT person's perspective on that.

I don't use my work e-mail for anything but work stuff.
I use hotmail for my personal e-mail.

they can if they have the time and resources to do so. Many companies do not. Like PJT said, they keep back ups of email etc in the event they need them. My company says the same thing, but I know for a fact that they do not monitor the daily use.

I work for a financial firm and they have to keep track of everything because they get audited all the time. SEC regulations or something.
Because I connect to the proxy to get out all they see is that I have a browser open.

Here is my software of choice if I want to "watch" you:

There are much more sophisticated software packages out there, but this gives me the information raw.

not only can they view your email, web, etc., as ChuckyFinster says, but they can view your realtime conversations over Yahoo Messenger/AIM or any other instant messenger tool...so, be careful out there

uouh! it's good to know some one is watching out there. Gotta be more careful and not try to break corporate rules. Something good I am doing since they haven't given me a warning for all the time I spent trifuel :D

In some instances letting them sleep is better as it keeps them from screwing up the real work.

Most likely because you gained their respect, as they followed the shaving thread and read your posts about being above our smut.

The question I have is:

Why would you ever want to work for a company or manager who would actually monitor your web usage? If they are to the point of monitoring web usage and chastising people ... well there are much bigger managerial issues that they need to investigate.

Only you can take responsibility for that. I became self employed, no benifits, investing my nest egg, and hope it will hatch. Soon HOPFULLY you will see a banner flashing on the trifuel. ;-)

Well best of luck to you!!! I am jealous really. I have been trying to find something to do part time, but short of schlepping coffee at Starbucks, its hard. its really more to keep me busy because I think completely not working, I might get bored :( My current job will not allow me to go part time.

Brittda, that is exactly why I did it. I liked my job, and especially my boss. She is very funny and we will do the Zurich company triathlon, together with another employee, but she will have to get rid of her pullbuoy. She laughs and says she likes having a buoy between her legs. Sorry! She is a 59 year old wild cat, that looks 49. But the work I could do in my sleep, and many of the people just complain and seem to hang on to their troubles and problems. They need them, and I don't.

jajajaja. Blitz I stopped writting in that thread but they continued reading for my reaction and when they figured it out they opted to keep me aboard.
Brittda, i hear you I'm in the same situation. But hey benefits, medical, matching 401ks, regular work hours and perks are hard to get when you are in your own. Sometimes an extra income would be great and I would work a part time job but one that is good.

Can the IT people do it? Yes. Will they? Probably not. As long as you stay away from "Objectionable" sites you probably wouldn't get flagged. I work at a fairly large company in the IT department, but there are only 4 of us for ~700 users. We have better stuff to do than monitor everyones computer usage (like post on BB's).
I guess what I am trying to say, is don't give them a reason to single you out. Get your work done, stay away from porn and you will be fine. Oh, and bribe your IT guys with a free lunch everynow and then, it goes along way (you can even charge the company if you talk work right? :) )
