Cycling Shoes...numb toes
Search! didnt we just go over this last week (re numb toes?)
Bike shoes and clipless are FAR stiffer and transfer a lot more power than flexy running shoes and toe clips. A pretty significant amount.
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
I recently made the switch from runners/toe clips to bike shoes/pedals and the difference is night and day. Definitely a lot more power transfer.
I'm still a little wary of the whole "being stuck to the bike" thing, but it's fading as I get more experience in.

Triguy...not sure if you are trying to help but I have to say that sometimes you are very defeating for those of us who have not posted 797 times. I understand the use of the search on this site, I like it, I use it but sometimes I just need to throw out a quick question. This does not mean you have to answer. You have a lot of knowledge as do the others on this site, that's why I come here and why I feel I can ask any question. When you say, "Search!" it is very defeating and sort of leads me to refrain from asking questions. I actually do a lot of research but again, sometimes I just want to throw out a quick question. I hope you see where I am coming from as a newbie who just wants to learn and sometimes doesn't have the time for the research.
I'll do my best to use Search! from here on out.
If you're toes are continually going numb, make sure the shoes aren't strapped/tied to tightly, that's how I do it to myself.
Make sure you socks aren't bunched up in the toebox. Also, like Jamie said, sometimes you can have your shoes strapped to tightly. A third thing to look at is sometimes the tongue of the shoe will cut off circulation because of the way it sits, if this is the case, try a thinner pair of socks.
edited to say: don't forget to trim your toenails.
I got numb toes in the beginning and had to go up a size in shoes :) Thats what I get for trying to use the shoes that came with my bike when I bought it from the guy lol.
I agree with the poster too. I would think any activity in these forums would be a good thing. Sometimes they seem really slow and it allows some of us who are brand new and haven't thought to ask the question yet a glance into a new topic. (wow, thats a long sentence)

I have a spin class tonight so I am going to take all of your suggestions into consideration. I think I may have had the strap that goes across the top of my foot a little too tight. I'll losen that up. I am also going to find some thinner socks on my lunch break, I see others wearing the thinner socks so that probably is the reason.
Has anyone ever found or heard of seamless socks? I get a hot spot on my little toes when I am running and I think it's because of the seam that runs along my toes.
Again, thanks for you help.
one more thing that was suggested to me, is to move the clip either forward or back(you may have to play with it). I used to have the problem too and this helped.
have not heard of seamless socks, but I wear those thin "ironman" socks when I ride/run they work for me.
Numbness is caused either by lack of blood flow or nerve irritation. Most everyone has mentioned some good things that can cause one or the other. Looking at it from the inside out might also help you figure out why you are getting numb toes.

Well my toes felt..(no pun intended) much better during my spin class last night. An hour of riding and the numbness was not bad. I just bought these shoes so the cleets may need to be adjust a bit but I didn't strap them down as tight on the upper strap and that seemed to help a lot. I wiggled my toes around when I did feel some tingling and that seemed to keep the numbness from creaping.
Thanks for all your suggestions.
I also have numb toe problems, that come and go, and were worse off in the mornings when it was cooler, but I also started getting them during extremely long car rides and plane flights. With the of a PT, we've traced this down to the stiffness of my shoes, as well as my reluctance to stretch. I've put orthotics in my shoes and played around with the tightness of my straps and had some help, but chronic tightness in my legs and lower back is more my problem. If you are prone to IT problems and tight hamstrings, sitting on the bike can cause pressure on you sciatic nerve and parallel running blood vessels, leading to nerve irritation and disrupted blood flow in your legs and feet; this problem gets much worse if your hamstrings/IT and surrounding muscles and connective tissue are tight to begin with, as they are already putting pressure on your nerves and vessels. The best advice I got was to work on my core strength and posture and to try to do yoga at least once a week and it helps when I actually follow it. So if your problem stems from this direction, I hope this will help you.
I'll do my best to use Search! from here on out.
You better user search!! Or I'll strap your shoes too tight!! :D
Anyway,
I think loosening your shoes, and thin socks are the first things I would check. I had a problem and then I had the position of the cleat adjusted on the shoe. The pressure on a certain part of my foot was causing numbness. When it was adjusted there was less pressure. You might have to play around with that until you get it comfy for you.
If that doesn't work wear your bunny slippers and use toe clips.
It doesn't have the power transfer but it would look pretty cool!!
Nothing to it, but to do it

When I first started riding my toes would go numb, makes it hard to get off the bike and go for a run. That did improve but a friend of mine suggested I get some cycling shoes. I just purchased my first pair. I wore them during my spin class (yes we have clips on our spin bikes. it's awesome.) My toes again started to go numb. What is going on? Any suggestions?
Another question along the same lines, what is the big deal with cycling shoes? Why buy them? Why not use running shoes and toe clips?
Can you tell I'm still new when it comes to all the gear. :D
