Not impossible dreams, just things you really, really, really want to do. Call it making your life meaningful if you like.

My list:

1. Qualify to race Ironman Hawaii. - I need to be 3hrs faster
but each five years older I become, the qualifying times get slower.

2. Ride the "Highway of Death" near La Paz, Bolivia

3. Experience sunrise & sunset at Ayer's Rock in Oz.

4. Hike down and up the Grand Canyon - seen it, haven't hiked it.

5. Climb Kilimanjero

6. Publish a million words.

7. Climb Alpe d'Huez on my bicycle.

8. Have a thousand people pay to hear me speak.

9. Find an attractive, available woman who can do an ironman triathlon,
write a sonnet, and who understands the Chandresekar limit.

Yeah, I know the last one is a stretch, but hey, I'm willing to cook..

I could make a list,
but I think I just want to live well,
be the best person I can be,
be the best daddy I can be,

and of course have fun doing it!! :D

POC-Could help you with #4. I have a group I do a rim to rim run/hike with every year. We go down the North Rim and out the South in about 7 hours....usually mid October

Kilimanjero is also on my short list :)

Dude, I'm not sure I want a woman who writes poetry about white dwarfs.

And by the way if L'Alpe de Huez is on your life list, you gotta do L'Etape de Tour this year. It finishes on the L'Alpe and it will be an incredible experience.

Not that you couldn't find that woman or those women, but if she was that capable physically, attractive, and was a literary and physics brain, would she want any of us?
Maybe, if she was slumming??
Maybe me, for my sheer 'Goofyness'?? , because I have that. :D

Only one real goal, at least if I can help it. Help my kids grow up knowing how to organize their lives to be happy at whatever they do. For me? Probably never stop being the best I can be at what ever I value.

At the top of my list is to run the Boston Marathon, but I'm going to take care of that one in April, so I'll have to start looking for a replacement. Being able to go heliskiing in Alaska is certainly something I'd like to try.

I've done the road from La Paz to Coroico on MTB bike and by SUV several times. It is quite an event. You're freezing up top and sweating at the bottom. The views are amazing. The mountain biking is not technical, but two people in our group boarded the SAG wagon after minor falls near the cliffs put the scare in them. Blazing up and down the road in an SUV was much scarier than taking the bike down. Use GravityBolivia.com. They cost a little more but have the nicest bikes. Some of the other tour groups have Wal-Mart quality bikes that appear to have last been serviced at the factory ... of course if you really want to be scared ....

My list of things I'd like to do:
1. Visit at least one new country every year.
2. See Antarctica
3. Win a regional Xterra event
4. Tour with another band.
5. Ride the Trans-Siberian railroad.
6. Take a dogsled tour north of the arctic circle
7. Be in times square on NYE. I tried this year, but 3pm was too late to get in.
8. Drive a Lancia Stratos in a vintage rally
9. Win a national Rally racing championship
10. Finish my miata track car exactly as I want it
11. Start another business, retire young, and become an academic
12. Never stop learning
13. Never stop moving and never stop living.

3. Ride my bike thru Europe.
4. See all of the archeological sites I've read about.
5. Visit every continent on earth.
6. Learn how to scuba dive and go swimming with the fishes (a phobia of mine).
7. See my nieces and nephew grow up.
8. To steal one from tribro...have my pictures published.

How? Keep swimming, running, and riding. Keep taking pictures. Pay off my current debt and start saving for my trips. Or find a rich "sponsor". ;)

This is kind of funny. Before graduating HS I wrote up a list of 100 things I wanted to do before I died (including driving a NASCAR Pace Car...) but here are my favorites:
1) Become a military (Army) officer
2) Finish an IM (Florida 2006)
3) Hike the AT
4) Adventure Race
5) Become fluent in another language
6) Be Happy

1. Visit at least one new country every year.
I'm right on target with this one, and running a little ahead of schedule. Next stop is Ecuador.

2. See Antarctica
There are Anartic cruises. They are pretty pricey, so I figure this will come later.

3. Win a regional Xterra event
Training every day.

4. Tour with another band.
I'm on hiatus between bands. I toured when I was younger. I'm writing my own songs now, but probably won't join another band for another year or so.

5. Ride the Trans-Siberian railroad.
Ten day trips are pretty reasonably priced. This is on my list after exploring more of South and Central America.

6. Take a dogsled tour north of the arctic circle
Dogsled tours are also reasonably priced .. I wonder if I could do a dogsledding tour and the Trans-Siberian railroad on the same trip?

7. Be in times square on NYE. I tried this year, but 3pm was too late to get in.
We'll head out earlier.

8. Drive a Lancia Stratos in a vintage rally
Lancia Stratos prices have been going up lately. It'll be a while until I can get one. First I need to get another garage.

9. Win a national Rally racing championship.
Well I won the North American Rally Cup for Production GT cars in 1997, but it was more by default. I'd like to rally again, but I don't plan on this for another 5-10 years. Xterra fills that need right now.

10. Finish my miata track car exactly as I want it.
The car is in storage at the moment, so I need to find a garage I can rent in Philly and get back to work on it. I plan to do this when the weather turns nicer. All the major work is done. I just need to sort the suspension and clean up some of the bodywork.

11. Start another business, retire young, and become an academic.
Well I just applied to the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, and I feel good about getting in. My focus will be on entrepreneurship and building the knowledge and networks I need to start another business.

12. Never stop learning
13. Never stop moving and never stop living.

I don't really have a list. At one time I did, but as I have gotten older I have done and experienced so much that if I were to die tomorrow, I will have done more in nearly 37 years than most will ever hope to (and like Anton said, many are on your lists many are not) I have been quite lucky actually. Now my goals have refocused to just be the best I can be at what ever it is I decide to do.

Don't be too hard on yourself Anton. We haven't seen Chucky yet.
Maybe he's really David Hasselhof?
I wouldn't bet against DH scoring a few Jennifers. He's up there in the looks dept. along with Brad Pitt and Ben Affleck.
Sadly, the Jennifers don't seem to care what your bike split is.

Most posters have grasped the concept. I'm inspired by some of your posted items - beldreuger & Lisa want to see Antarctica & the other six continents. I'm up for that. I have three to go.
Some are too vague for this list. "Being the best person you can be" is admirable, but doesn't quite fit the list of "things you really, really, really want to do before you die." "like watching nieces grow up" or "be happy," similarly, doesn't quite make this list, only because it is simply the minimum expected of all of us.

I also expect that everyone on trifuel would put on their list, either an Ironman tri or perhaps the World Age-Group Oly distance Champs.
But sled-dogging the arctic (Beldreuger) climbing El Cap (tri-guy) are just the sort of thing I was hoping to hear.

Libor wants to know what you're doing to achieve them. I thionk that's another thread altogether. Set your mind free of limitations, but without being silly. Sure, we all would like to win the lottery but that's in the category of things we can't control.
Driving a motorbike in the Dakar Ralley or running the Marathon Du Sables, is something you could conceivably do on your own merits, see the difference?

Who else is holding onto a dream, something that is driving them to do before checking out of Hotel Earth?

Hey merlin,
I checked L'Etape Tours. They are all sold out for this year but ranging from 400 to 800 pounds seems like a decent price. Maybe another time. I wouldn't mind doing it alone either - more time to stop and take pictures or to smell the roses, instead of a mad, sweaty, grind up the hill with the other lemmings!

also, any girl who can complete an IM can write sonnets about anything she likes in my book! For me, there's something special and beautiful about the quality of mind necessary to grasp these divergent subjects, but there are others of course. :)
Bring her on!

(2) Go to New Zealand (yes, this again might involve the IM there...)
(3) Do an adventure race in another country* (not counting Mexico.. yes, it's another country, but close to home, and I did one there already)
(4) Do a multi-day AR
(5) Take "A Crazy Me and My Bike" journey (unsure on details of this one)

Noel.

Lance and Eddy Merckx are picking Jan to win the TdF this year.
He obviously likes it on the podium.

He wasn't even on the podium in 2004 and last time he was 3rd..
Okay, he does train hard, but in 2004 he was only on the right weight on the very last day he HAD to... I think that is sloppy for someone of his profession. But even then, I admire his persistence. He does deserve to win though. Lance was worried about him for a good reason all those years..

Nope. No one "deserves" to win. If he puts in the required time and takes the win then fine - but no one not even LA deserved to win. Wins are earned.

Okay, yeah I guess if you look at it that way..
What I meant to say was; he needs to work for it, DESERVE it, but I think a lot of people would have gone nuts, just finishing behind the same guy every time, when before Lance, Ullrich had one the Tour. He could have just quit, but he didn't, remember when Mayo just quit and just left the Tour, Ullrich just kept going, eventhough he had no prayer.
