I think I saw something about people putting electrical tape on their tire so they don't wear it down. Does this work? Does it cause any problems?
thanks

Never tried it. I use my old tires.
that's what I was doing, just getting tired of switching tires. The weather has been crazy here, and I've been able to get outside quite a bit. Just looking for an easier way. I'd rather just peel away a piece of tape then change a tire.
I use and old tire too :D
I've heard bad things about using tape, but I've never tried it (where bad things = the tape melting because with less airflow and more friction the tire gets even hotter, and then is a sticky mess and still a ruined tire) but I don't know for sure.
Oh, and I currently use what is soon to be the "old tire" ;)
Grab a cheap set or used set of rims and mount the old tires on. Then its as easy as your quick release.
Thanks for the responses. that all makes sense. no tape here. Just on a budget and didn't want to get into a training rim or anything like that. the less additional costs I have the more I can race...lol
Tape has worked great for me.
no melting issues? what kind of tape do you use? Do you do one continuous strand?
Finally burned up my old training tires yesterday. 450 on the Roller was too much for those poor, year old training tires.
Excel Sports has some Contentials available for Training Use Only....

At $33 each, I may order a couple and see how well they work.
18 on the rollers last night, until I suffered a blow out, tire is now officially shot.
You can also get a cheap road tire for about $15-$20 at your LBS.
I'm working with one of those Continentals on my trainer right now. It was $34 at my LBS. I'll let you guys know how it goes. If it lasts 2x as long on the trainer as a regular cheap tire it will be worth it to me. Downside: you cannot go outside with it, so I'll be getting a lot of tire-changing practice come April.

$66 dollars for a pair of tires to use on your Rollers? That's more than I paid for 3 Carbon Comp race tires last year. Come to think of it, I got a pair of IRC Featherweight race tires at a swap meet last month for $10.
I've got plenty of tires lying around with small puncture holes --- perfect for my rollers, or my mag trainer --- if I ever get around to using them!
IronMike,
No melting issues. I use regular black electrical tape, one continuous strand, and I go around the tire twice (if you were just going to do a couple rides before taking it off, I'm pretty sure one wrap would work.
It only costs a couple bucks for the electrical tape, and this way you don't have to change your tires (which I despise) and you can go between your trainer and the road easily.
Sounds like a plan....thanks
